Chapter 2: Rebirth In Aetherion

Kael's eyes slowly opened. Lying on the wet, tender earth, he was first aware of a strange, cold sensation in his arms. "Where… am I?" he spoke half-out, sitting up awkwardly.

Memories of the volcano eruption came in broken pieces while he pounded his head. He could remember ash, flame, and his final desperate clasp on a burning object.

Now his body was different…lighter, stronger even—like he had been reborn.

He glanced around.

The thick and alien forest stood there. Broad, twisted trunks of trees hemmed him in, and their leaves glowed with a soft, blue light.

Kael breathed softly, "This is not Earth."

"What happened to me?"

The air was filled with a low hum. He didn't recognize any of the sounds in the forest: distant chimes, a rustling that wasn't wind, and a gentle melody that changed with the wind. Kael's heart raced with fear and wonder. He slowly got up, still weak but somehow energized. "Hello?" His voice barely echoed as he yelled.

"Is anyone there?" The soft, enigmatic sounds of the forest were the only response for a very long time.

Kael took a deep breath and began walking along a narrow path that wound between the trees.

As he tried to make sense of his environment, his feet were hesitant and slow.

A brilliant, crystal clear interface appeared before him as he walked.

Kael blinked. "What the.?" Strange letters, numbers, and words like "HP," "Mana," and "Quests" appeared on the floating screen.

A brief window with the text

"**Welcome, Kael**" flashed. Now your Aetherion journey starts. **

He breathed out. "I have. a plan?" he said aloud, half to himself and half to the nothingness.

The interface glowed softly, marking a status bar that listed his strength, agility, and several unknown talents.

Moreover, one entry in the quest log was listed: **Find the Beacon of Light – Your First Task. **

Kael raised an eyebrow. "This is crazy," he said. "I'm not dreaming, am I?"

He tried to remember what had happened before.

A volcanic eruption, a flash of bright light, and then. nothing. "I must be alive… somehow," he murmured.

He began to read the small print on the screen. Web-based system. You've been reborn. Be careful what you do with your newfound powers.

The language was rough and to the point. Kael was thrilled and apprehensive. "Reborn? new powers?" he grumbled, trying to make sense of it all.

"Hello?" a soft voice rang out from behind him.

Kael spun around and there was nothing but the black trees. "Who is it?" he demanded, his voice trembling.

"Over here," the voice responded again, this time more insistently.

Kael followed the sound and found a little clearing through which the moonlight filtered to the forest floor. In the center, resting in the soft light, stood a young man with peaceful eyes. He wore simple clothing that appeared to be old but new at the same time, and he carried himself calmly.

"I'm Joren," the stranger said. "I saw you appear out of nowhere. Are you all right?"

After a pause, Kael answered, "I—I'm Kael." I really have no idea what is going on. I died on an expedition. And now I am here. Joren released a soft smile.

"Aetherion is not like Earth.

There have been numerous who have arrived here under strange circumstances.

Kael, the system selected you for a reason.

You have a reason here.

"Kael frowned. "Destiny? I just want to know where I am and how to go home. Joren shook his head. "The problem isn't home right now. Kael, you've been given a second chance. Take it.

The world here is magic and wondrous—and dangerous.".

Kael looked at the shiny interface with a second glance.

"I have this system.

It tells me that I have ability and a quest."

Joren nodded.

"This is where we employ that system. It provides us with power and missions in order to restore the balance of Aetherion. You need to use it wisely. Humans have feared its power and lost many times, but control must be mastered. Kael took a deep breath.

"Okay. I have a mission. It reads, "Find the Beacon of Light." What do you think it is?" Joren shrugged.

"The Beacon of Light, they say, is a leftover of ancient power that serves as a beacon to those who are attempting to mend the world's wounds.

It might also allow you to discover more of your memories.".

Abruptly, a rustling sound came from the bushes.

Kael's eyes widened. "Did you hear that?" Joren looked around cautiously. It seems like something is sneaking there. You are not alone, Kael. Watch out."

Kael nodded, his heart pounding. "I'm ready… I think."

The interface beeped softly again, and another quest marker appeared on a small map at the edge of the screen. "Travel north to the Silver Grove," it said. "The Beacon of Light awaits."

Joren laughed. "Sounds like an introduction. Follow the marker, and I'll walk with you for a bit longer."

With some reluctance, Kael at last stated, Let's go. I suppose I have no choice but to go where this goes."

Joren patted Kael on the shoulder. "Good. Remember, Kael, that the system is here to help. Trust it and trust yourself."

Kael gazed at the interface which resembled a shard and now seemed to be embedded in him.

"I'm hoping it. I trust it." As they set off into the dark, foreboding forest, the light-filled interface softly flickered with more information, giving Kael an uncomfortable mix of hope and fear. Unusual creatures hid in the shadows, and the forest whispered of ancient power and magic.

"Did you ever imagine that life could change so quickly?"

Kael asked softly. Joren smiled softly. "In Aetherion, anything is possible."

Kael smiled back feebly, but his mind was racing.

He could feel the energy of the system flowing through him, promising powers and tests to be discovered.

And as they continued on down the moonlit path of ill light and glowing markers, a distant sound—a low, half-heard growl—echoed through the darkness.

Kael slowed down. "What was that supposed to mean?" he asked, his voice tremulous.

"I don't know, but this is like we're not alone," Joren said with a frown. Kael, stay close to me. Kael looked around in terror as they gained speed.

"Did you hear that noise?" He asked. Joren answered softly, "Yeah." "There is something moving in the darkness.

We have to be careful.".

The system's arm-mounted interface flashed desperate alarms as they walked. "It says danger is imminent," Kael read from the screen.

"My heart's pulsating." I am excited yet afraid."

Joren nodded.

"We take new steps each time." Kael, have faith in the system.

It helps you with the comprehension of the space. Kael paused for a moment and looked at Joren. "But what if I am not prepared for what is out there? What if I fail? Joren said,

"Listen, Kael," and placed his hand on his shoulder.

Apathy welcomes every beginning.

No one is ever quite ready until you are right in the middle of things.

Because you are stronger than you realize, the system is there to help you.". Kael's reply, after he took a breath, was, "Okay, I'll try." I need to do it. I need to know why I am here and what I must do." Joren said, "Good." "We leave the ruins behind now. The routine is over. We are coming into the unknown, which is our fate."

They walked deeper into the woods.

The light on the arm of Kael's arm was the only light on the totally black road. Kael's eyes were wide with wonder as he said, "Joren, every step into a new world. I don't know if I will ever get my bearings.

" Joren gave a serene response, "We will. There have been numerous visitors here. They will always find their way as long as they have faith in their instincts. Kael looked at the screen that glowed. A brand-new quest marker is visible on the horizon.

Do you know what it means?"

"I believe it means we must continue. Joren explained, "The system gives us work that helps us grow and learn about Aetherion." "But don't forget, it is not about getting things accomplished—it is about learning who you are in this new world." Kael slowly nodded. "I need to know everything. I feel like each upgrade of the system reminds me of something more about what I can be." Joren halted and went on, "That is true. But listen carefully. Sometimes we get danger and sometimes hope from the system. You must learn to read both messages.".

A growl was heard somewhere in the bushes. Kael's eyes flew open and he breathed softly, "Did you hear that?"

Joren's expression turned more serious. "Yes. That sound means we're being watched. Stay close; don't wander away. Kael's voice was shaking. It doesn't suit me. But Joren, I trust you. I will do what you tell me.".

They did not travel in a rush, moving slowly and quietly. And as he placed his hand on the system, Kael rode on his mind where he reflected on his past life, his learned abilities, and the enigmatic planet where they were now standing. Again, a couple of moments passed before Kael opened his lips, "Joren, what if this adventure remakes me beyond recognition. What if I lose myself entirely."

Joren smiled warmly. Then Kael, something you should remember is that you don't have to do it by yourself. We are with you. Every challenge will shape you, but it will also reveal the true you."

A low growl that grew louder was followed by a soft rustling from the bushes nearby. Kael stopped and looked at Joren with wide eyes.

Joren stated firmly, "That's our next test, Kael. Are you ready? Kael swallowed hard, "Yes, I'm ready. Okay, face it head on? With that, they moved forward into the darkness, from the known to the unknown—a destiny that promised danger as well as hope.".
