Tiernan knew I disliked the smell of alcohol, so he hardly touched it after we got married.
Let alone drinking with another woman.
I was pretty confident about this, but when I looked up, I saw him gazing at me with a troubled expression.
"Lacey... Scarlett's in a bad mood because of you too..."
"I'll have a drink with her... to make amends on your behalf..."
Make amends on my behalf!
I had no idea what I'd done wrong that required making amends.
I looked at Tiernan with some surprise, as he wanted to do something but insisted on using me as an excuse.
When I saw the plea in his eyes, I laughed.
"Go if you want to."
I said it casually, but when I heard Tiernan and Scarlett leaving cheerfully, I was in tears.
This man who constantly professed his love for me had changed his heart without me knowing.
The special treatment he once set up for me, one by one, was now being broken for another woman.
I washed up quickly and went to bed.
But I tossed and turned all night, only managing to close my eyes as dawn approached.
And Tiernan, who said he was going to have a drink with Scarlett, didn't return until I was getting up to go to work.He enveloped me in his arms as soon as he walked in, his body exuding the fragrance of a fresh shower.
"Lacey, I drank too much last night. I didn't come home because I was afraid I'd reek of alcohol."
I didn't want to expose his lie, so I just mumbled a response.
Tiernan, however, cautiously brought up old grievances.
"Lacey, your actions yesterday were indeed inappropriate. It's understandable that Scarlett was upset."
I paused while changing my shoes, looking up at Tiernan, whose heart seemed full of thoughts of Scarlett.
Suppressing the pain in my heart, I asked, "Didn't you already make amends yourself?"
Scarlett's social media was flooded with evidence of their wild night, and the lipstick marks on Tiernan's body were still clearly visible.
I raised my hand to touch his collar and asked, "Isn't this enough?"
Tiernan followed my gaze and then shook his head nervously, trying to explain.
"Lacey, it's not what you think..."
But I didn't want to hear any more. I grabbed my bag and closed the door.
On the way, my eyes stung as I contemplated whether this marriage was worth preserving.
When I arrived at the hospital, the doctor who had given me my report yesterday came over to greet me and casually asked,"Lacey, didn't Scarlett come with you? Her illness can't be put off any longer."
I shook my head and sighed, "Life and death are predetermined."
She seemed to notice my mood wasn't quite right, and also sighed without saying anything.
After a hazy, busy day, I returned home exhausted.
Upon entering, I saw a faint candlelight on the table, underneath which was dinner prepared by Tiernan.
The corners of my mouth instinctively lifted, but just as I was about to step forward, Scarlett came out of the bedroom wearing my clothes.
"Brother Tiernan, how do I look in this outfit?"
"Lacey's fashion sense is terrible, I barely found this eye-catching piece."
She twirled around showing off, while continuously complaining.
I laughed at her for not knowing Tiernan's preferences, thinking she was still an outsider after all.
The next second, my smile froze on my face.
