The Noble's Request

The Silver Curse – Volume 1, Chapter 7: The Noble's Request

A Suspicious Job

The parchment in Yuto's hands felt heavier than it should. A missing cargo shipment, a noble's request, and a sense of unease that clung to every word written on the quest details.

Mira peered over his shoulder, arms crossed. "A noble's job for a rookie like you? That's rare. They usually don't trust new blood."

Yuto glanced up. "The Guild Master seemed to think it was worth my time."

Mira smirked. "Or he thinks you're disposable. Either way, guess you're taking it."

Yuto folded the parchment and tucked it away. "I need to move forward. If this quest helps, then so be it."

Meeting Lord Renald

The noble estate stood in stark contrast to the rest of Valkris. Tall iron gates, pristine white stone walls, and guards stationed at every entrance. Yuto approached cautiously, flashing his guild insignia when a guard stepped forward.

"State your business."

"Here for the missing cargo request."

The guard gave him a once-over before nodding and leading him through the courtyard. The air smelled of fresh-cut grass and expensive incense. Yuto felt out of place, but he kept his posture steady.

Inside the grand hall, a man in fine blue robes sat behind a polished desk, gold rings adorning his fingers. His sharp eyes fixed on Yuto the moment he entered.

"You are the adventurer sent by the guild?" Lord Renald's voice was smooth but carried an edge of impatience.

Yuto bowed slightly. "Yuto. I'm here to investigate the missing cargo."

Renald exhaled through his nose, leaning back in his chair. "That shipment contained rare materials meant for my personal craftsman. It vanished along the northern trade route without a trace. My men found no wreckage, no signs of struggle. Just… gone."

Yuto frowned. "No bodies? No tracks?"

Renald's jaw tightened. "Exactly. Something unnatural is at work. That's why I requested outside help. I need this handled discreetly."

Yuto nodded. "I'll need all available details. Any known threats in the area?"

"Nothing but the usual bandits and beasts. But they wouldn't leave without taking something. Whatever happened, it wasn't normal."

Yuto absorbed the information carefully. "I'll look into it."

Renald waved him off. "See that you do. And, adventurer—fail me, and I'll make sure you regret it."

Yuto's gaze remained neutral. "Noted."

Investigating the Route

The northern trade road stretched far beyond Valkris, weaving through dense forests and rolling hills. Yuto followed the path carefully, his senses on high alert.

Hours passed, and still, nothing. No broken carts. No signs of battle.

Then he found it.

The scent hit first—a thick, metallic tang in the air. Yuto crouched beside a patch of disturbed earth, brushing away the dirt to reveal something chilling.

A deep, unnatural burn mark seared into the ground. Not from fire. Something else.

His fingers brushed the edge of it, and a faint pulse of energy thrummed through him.

Magic.

He stood quickly, scanning the treetops. Someone—or something—was watching him.

A shadow flickered between the trees.

Yuto drew his sword. "Show yourself."

Silence.

Then, a whisper. Low, chilling.

"You should not have come here."
