The Silver Curse – Volume 2, Chapter 2: The Shadow in the Forest
A Silent Watcher
Yuto's grip on his sword tightened as the shadows ahead seemed to shift unnaturally. The dense foliage of the western forest swallowed most of the daylight, leaving behind an eerie half-darkness that sent a chill down his spine.
Beside him, Mira was already on edge. Her usual smirk had disappeared, replaced by sharp eyes scanning their surroundings. "That feeling we had earlier? Yeah, it's not just in our heads."
Yuto gave a short nod. "Something's here."
The silence was almost suffocating. No birds. No rustling leaves. Just the steady pounding of Yuto's heartbeat in his ears. Then, a whisper—low, breathy, and impossible to track.
"You should not have come."
Yuto barely had time to react before the first strike came.
The Ambush
A figure moved like a specter, faster than any human should be. Yuto twisted just in time to parry a blade aimed straight for his throat. Sparks flew as steel met steel, the impact rattling through his arms.
The assailant was cloaked in black, their face hidden behind a featureless mask. Their movements were unnatural—fluid, like shifting smoke. Not a normal enemy.
Mira wasted no time, lunging with a downward strike. The figure twisted impossibly, avoiding the attack with inhuman speed.
"Damn," Mira hissed, regaining her footing. "This thing's quick."
Yuto exhaled slowly. "Not just quick. Unnatural."
The masked figure cocked their head, almost as if amused, before vanishing into the trees once more.
A Deadly Game
The battle turned into a chase. The figure attacked in bursts, striking from the shadows before retreating just as quickly. Yuto and Mira struggled to keep up, their weapons only meeting empty air more often than not.
Then, a shift.
Yuto ducked under another swipe, his instincts screaming at him to move. Too late.
A sharp pain bloomed in his side as a dagger slipped past his defenses, cutting deep. He gritted his teeth, staggering back as the assassin faded into the darkness once again.
Mira lunged forward, blocking the next strike aimed for Yuto's weakened side. "No more games, bastard!" she snarled, counterattacking with a brutal swing.
For the first time, their opponent faltered, just slightly.
"Now!" Yuto roared.
He surged forward, ignoring the pain, and struck fast.
Revealing the Truth
His blade connected. A shallow cut, but enough. The figure staggered, and for the first time, Yuto got a clear look.
A gloved hand reached up, pulling the mask away—revealing a face he didn't expect.
A woman. Young, with sharp red eyes and long dark hair. Her expression was unreadable as she stared at Yuto, blood trickling down her cheek.
"You…" Yuto's breath came out uneven. "Who are you?"
She tilted her head, lips curling slightly. "I suppose you'll find out soon enough."
Then, in a swirl of shadows, she disappeared into the forest, leaving only the faint scent of magic behind.
Mira let out a breath. "Well, that just got a whole lot weirder."
Yuto wiped the blood from his blade, his mind racing. Whoever she was, she knew something about the disappearances. And he wasn't about to let this mystery slip away.
