White Phantom - Chapter 24The Weight of the Past

Bai Shen stood at the edge of a silent ravine, his silver hair swaying with the cold mountain wind. The past few days had been relentless—pushing his body to its limits, testing his mind against shadows he could barely grasp. But now, as the night stretched endlessly before him, something heavier settled in his chest.

Memories.

Memories of Mei Lin.

Her voice, her laughter—soft echoes of a world he could never return to.

His fingers curled into a fist. The pain never truly left him. It lingered beneath the surface, a wound that refused to heal. He had tried to suppress it, tried to bury it beneath his relentless pursuit of vengeance, but some nights, like this one, the weight of it all was suffocating.

A rustle in the trees pulled him back to the present.

"You never sleep, do you?"

The voice was soft yet steady. Bai Shen turned slightly, sensing the presence of the woman who had been shadowing him for days now—Lian Yue.

She stepped forward, her silhouette outlined against the pale moonlight. Unlike others, she did not try to mask her presence from him. Instead, she let him sense her movements, as if silently asking to be acknowledged.

"I don't need sleep," Bai Shen replied, his voice flat.

"That's a lie," she countered. "Even the strongest need rest."

Bai Shen remained silent. He could tell she wasn't here to argue.

Lian Yue studied him for a moment before shifting her gaze to the ravine below. "You come here every night. Is this where you mourn her?"

His breath hitched for just a second, but he didn't answer.

She took a step closer. "I don't know who she was to you, but I can see it in your face. Grief... it lingers."

Bai Shen's jaw tightened. "Why are you here?"

She exhaled, crossing her arms. "Because I want to understand you."

He turned his head slightly, his expression unreadable. "There's nothing to understand."

Lian Yue let out a quiet chuckle. "You say that, yet everything about you screams otherwise." She hesitated before adding, "You're afraid, aren't you?"

His fingers twitched at her words.

"You fight without hesitation, kill without mercy, but when someone tries to get close to you... you run."

Bai Shen's breath was slow, controlled. "You don't know anything about me."

"Maybe not," she admitted. "But I know pain when I see it. I know what it's like to lose someone and be left with nothing but ghosts."

The air between them grew heavy.

For the first time in a long while, Bai Shen felt something other than the cold emptiness that had consumed him since Mei Lin's death.

It was unsettling.

"You should leave," he muttered, his voice quieter this time.

But Lian Yue didn't move. "Not until you tell me why you keep looking back instead of moving forward."

Bai Shen let out a slow breath.

"...Because moving forward means letting go."

She stared at him for a long moment before speaking, her voice barely above a whisper. "No, it doesn't. It just means carrying them with you in a different way."

Silence.

Then, without another word, she turned and walked away, leaving Bai Shen alone with his thoughts.

For the first time in years, the weight on his chest didn't feel quite as crushing.

But it was still there.

And perhaps, it always would be.
