25: The Weight of Training

The world spun.

Each step was a struggle.

Averis gritted his teeth, forcing one foot in front of the other, but it felt like the ground was trying to suck him in. His legs screamed, his lungs burned, and his back ached as if he were dragging a boulder.

Actually… was there a boulder tied to him?

He looked down.

No, just his own two feet—which, at this point, might as well be stone blocks.

Title: Enduring Chick (You may be weak now, but one day you'll grow… maybe.)

---

Averis's eyelid twitched.

'Enduring Chick…?'

He stared at the screen in mute betrayal.

---

"Of all the things to call me… A chick?"

The Frost Raven cocked its head.

["Why do you look like you just got insulted?"]

"…No reason."

["Your face says otherwise."]

"Shut up, stupid bird."

["Hmph. Even a chick wouldn't be this slow."]

Averis ignored the jab and kept moving.

---

Halfway Down the Mountain…

His legs felt like jelly.

Each step wobbled like he was walking on a rope bridge during a storm.

It was pathetic.

The Frost Raven, comfortably perched on his shoulder, sighed dramatically.

["Do you need a cane? Or perhaps a sled? Oh wait, you ARE the sled."]

"…I hate you."

["No, you hate the mountain. But I understand—your suffering is amusing."]

Averis bit his tongue to stop himself from cursing out the bird.

---

At the Bottom of the Mountain

He collapsed.

Face-down.

Dirt tasted awful.

Averis groaned and turned onto his back, staring at the sky like a dead fish.

Sir Garret loomed over him, arms crossed.

"You survived."

"…Barely…"

Sir Garret chuckled, then clapped his hands together.

"I have good news!"

Averis perked up slightly.

Was training over? Was he getting a day off?

"From now on, you'll always be wearing those weights."

Averis froze.

Sir Garret grinned.

"Congratulations."

---

Silence.

The Frost Raven blinked.

["…You're going to faint, aren't you?"]

Averis collapsed again.

---

Moments Later…

Sir Garret poked him with his boot.

"You're not dead. Get up."

Averis did not move.

Sir Garret sighed, then pulled out a small vial.

"This will help."

Averis forced himself up, grabbed the bottle, and drank it in one gulp.

The high-quality recovery potion surged through his body.

Strength returned to his limbs.

Pain faded.

For a moment, he felt alive again.

Then.

Sir Garret's voice shattered his relief.

"Oh, by the way—I already informed your other teachers."

Averis blinked.

Sir Garret smiled.

"You won't be attending their classes today."

"...Why?"

"Because."

He gestured to the weights.

"You should use the day to get used to them."

Averis stared.

Sir Garret continued.

"And tomorrow, you'll attend all your classes while wearing them."

Averis's soul left his body.

He had dancing class tomorrow.
