A Night to Remember

Chapter 10: A Night to Remember

Michael carefully opened the passenger door for Jane, a gesture that made her smile softly. She slid into the seat, her fingers brushing against his as she adjusted herself. As soon as she settled in, Michael closed the door and walked around to the driver's side. He slid into the car and started the engine, the soft hum of the car filling the air as they pulled out of the parking lot.

The drive was peaceful, the streets dimly lit and quiet. Michael's hands were steady on the wheel, but his mind was racing. He glanced over at Jane, who had her eyes focused on the road ahead, her expression contemplative. After a few moments of silence, Michael broke it.

"So, Jane… What do you want to become in the future?" he asked, his voice soft but curious.

Jane turned to look at him for a brief moment before turning her eyes back to the road. "I want to be a nurse," she said, her voice steady yet filled with determination. "I know it's going to take a lot of studying, but I'm willing to put in the work."

Michael nodded, impressed by her ambition. "That's a big dream. I imagine it's a lot of hard work."

Jane let out a small laugh, though it sounded more like a sigh. "It is. Especially with my job at the diner. I barely get enough time to study, but I have to work. I need the money to pay for school, you know?"

Michael's brow furrowed with concern. "That must be difficult, juggling everything like that."

"It is," Jane admitted. "But what choice do I have? I want to make it, and this is the only way I know how."

There was a moment of silence as Michael processed her words. The thought of her working so hard, struggling to make her dreams come true, struck him deeply. Without really thinking, he spoke.

"I'd love to help with your fees, you know," he said, his voice gentle yet sincere.

Jane's eyes widened, and she turned to look at him in disbelief. "Why would you do that for me?" she asked, her voice a mix of surprise and confusion.

Michael shrugged, his gaze steady on the road ahead. "I just like to help people," he said, his tone matter-of-fact. "I see how hard you work, how much you care about your future. It's rare. And if I can make that easier for you, then I will."

For a moment, Jane was speechless. She blinked rapidly, her eyes filling with tears. She couldn't hold it in anymore. The overwhelming emotion washed over her, and she felt the first tears slip down her cheek. It wasn't sadness; it was joy, relief, and gratitude all tangled together.

"Michael…" she whispered, her voice breaking. "Thank you… so much. You don't know what this means to me."

Michael glanced over at her quickly, his eyes soft. "Hey, don't cry," he said, his voice low and soothing. "I'm just doing what feels right."

She wiped away the tears, smiling through them. "You're amazing. I don't know what to say…"

The car slowed as they neared Jane's house. Michael parked the car in front of the small but well-maintained compound, its old yet modern charm clear in the soft glow of the streetlights. The house was a bit worn, but there was something warm about it, something that made it feel like home.

He got out of the car first and walked around to open the door for Jane. She stepped out, still wiping away the last of her tears.

Together, they walked towards the entrance of the house, the sounds of their footsteps the only thing breaking the stillness of the night. The compound's exterior was a mixture of old stone walls and sleek, modern features, a testament to the blend of time that had shaped the place. Michael couldn't help but notice how the place seemed to hold memories, each corner speaking of a life lived.

As they reached the door, Jane paused, looking up at him with a soft smile. "Thanks again, Michael. You've made tonight so special. I'll never forget it."

Michael smiled back, his heart lighter than it had been in a long time. "Anytime, Jane. You deserve it."

They stood there for a moment, the air between them filled with an unspoken understanding.
