Chapter 6: A Long Ride to Hell

Evelyn liked control. She liked knowing exactly where she was going, exactly what needed to be done, and exactly how to do it.

Which was why, when they were assigned to a secure research facility outside D.C., she was not happy about the travel arrangements.

A two-hour drive. One car. And Ji-Ah Park.

When they walked into the garage, Evelyn immediately stopped short.

"There's only one car?" she asked the driver, a young military officer who looked deeply uncomfortable.

"Yes, ma'am. We're short on vehicles today."

Evelyn clenched her jaw. Ji-Ah, standing beside her, let out a small, amused breath.

"I'll drive," Ji-Ah said smoothly, already reaching for the door handle.

Evelyn snatched the keys first. "Not happening."

Ji-Ah raised an eyebrow. "Do you have control issues, Miss Carter?"

Evelyn gave her a tight-lipped smile. "No. I just don't trust you not to crash us into a ditch."

"Funny," Ji-Ah said, stepping back and gesturing toward the driver's seat. "I was about to say the same about you."

Evelyn ignored her and got into the car. Ji-Ah slid into the passenger seat, adjusting her seatbelt like she actually thought Evelyn might kill them both.

"Try not to die before we get there," Ji-Ah murmured.

Evelyn's grip tightened on the steering wheel.

This was going to be a long ride.
