A Stirring Heart

The morning rush at the café was relentless. Orders flew in faster than they could keep up, but Isagi and May had fallen into an effortless rhythm. They moved like two parts of a whole — Isagi managing the register and preparing drinks with precision, while May charmed every customer with her bright energy and warm smile.

"Two cappuccinos and a matcha latte for table five!" May called, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear as she spun toward him.

"Got it!" Isagi replied, his hands already moving. Their teamwork had become seamless, and with every shared glance and fleeting touch, his heart raced.

As the afternoon lull finally arrived, Mr. Sakamoto clapped his hands. "Great work, you two! Take a break — you've earned it."

They settled into a quiet corner of the café, sipping iced coffee and watching the few remaining customers. May stretched with a contented sigh. "This place feels so lively. I think I could work here forever."

Isagi smiled, watching her fondly. "You make it lively."

She blinked, surprised. "You're getting bold with your compliments lately, Isagi."

He felt his face warm but didn't look away. The words were slipping out easier — and with his resolve to confess growing, he didn't want to hold back.

Before he could speak again, Mr. Sakamoto approached with a grin. "Hey, you two, how about helping out with a little special project tomorrow? We're hosting a small evening event — live music, special menu, the works."

"Sounds fun!" May beamed. "We're in!"

As they walked back to the dormitory later, the sun dipped below the horizon, casting everything in gold and soft pink. Isagi felt the weight of his unsaid words growing heavier.

"May," he started, his voice quieter than usual.

She turned to him, her eyes reflecting the fading light. "Yeah?"

But the words died on his lips. "Nothing… just… I'm glad we're doing this together."

She smiled, and the warmth of it kept his hope alive.

Tomorrow, he told himself. Tomorrow, I'll tell her how I feel.
