The One Percent

The air burned. Smoke and fire twisted through the wreckage as the three Omega Variants closed in. Kairo's body was failing, his team was battered, and their strongest fighter—Rhea—was trapped.

But his mind focused on one thing.

Survival.

[ Survival Probability: 1% ]

A warning. A reality check.

And yet, he didn't care.

"Arin," Kairo said quietly. "How fast can you set up a controlled explosion?"

Arin's eyes flickered with realization. "You want to bring the whole place down on them?"

"Not just them." Kairo's gaze hardened. "Us too."

Lena blinked. "Are you insane?"

"Maybe," he admitted. "But right now, we don't win in a straight fight."

Arin gritted her teeth, already pulling a small detonator charge from her belt. "I can overload the remaining power cells in sixty seconds."

Lena adjusted her grip on her rifle. "Then we just need to stay alive for sixty seconds."

Easier said than done.

Valkir moved first.

He vanished in a blur of speed, appearing inches from Kairo, his fist a black blur—

Kairo barely dodged. The sheer force of the strike shattered the ground, sending shockwaves through the rubble.

Lena and Arin fired, bullets ricocheting off Valkir's reinforced body. The second Variant—a female with golden eyes—flashed forward.

She kicked Lena's rifle clean out of her hands and slammed a fist into Arin's gut, sending her flying.

The third Variant, the giant, stomped forward, grabbing a massive steel beam.

He swung it like a club.

Kairo ducked at the last second—the impact obliterated the ground where he stood.

[ System Alert: Adrenaline Surge Activated. ]

Kairo's movements sharpened. He spun around, his Void Claws igniting, slashing at Valkir's exposed side.

For the first time, he felt resistance.

A cut. A wound.

Valkir growled, stepping back in shock. His healing was still working, but Kairo had finally hurt him.

Lena took the opening, grabbing a plasma grenade from her belt.

She threw it.

The explosion engulfed the golden-eyed Variant, sending her flying into a wall.

Arin, still coughing from the earlier hit, pressed a final button.

Fifteen seconds.

But then—Rhea spoke.

"Kairo…" Her voice was weak, but determined.

He turned, eyes widening—

She had ripped off her cybernetic arm.

Underneath, wires and exposed flesh sparked wildly. She held something—a glowing core.

"The charge won't be enough," she said. "But this?"

Kairo's stomach twisted.

She was holding her own power source.

"If I overload this…" Rhea coughed, blood staining her lips. "…it'll wipe out everything within a mile."

Lena's eyes widened. "That includes you!"

Rhea smiled. "Then you better not waste it."

Five seconds.

Kairo's fists clenched. His mind screamed at him to stay, to help, to fight.

But Rhea's gaze was firm.

"Go."

Three seconds.

Kairo turned. "Lena, grab Arin!"

Lena didn't argue.

One second.

Then—they ran.

Kairo sprinted through the crumbling tunnels, Lena dragging Arin beside him.

Behind them, the entire facility exploded.

A shockwave of fire and debris chased them, tearing apart steel and stone.

Kairo pushed forward, lungs burning, every step fueled by the one thought in his mind—

Rhea.

She was still back there.

The explosion roared.

Then—silence.

Kairo gasped as he crawled out of the rubble. His vision blurred, body trembling.

Lena and Arin coughed beside him, covered in dust and blood.

The Black Citadel was gone.

Everything—wiped from existence.

For a long time, none of them spoke.

Then, Lena's voice cracked.

"Is she…?"

Kairo didn't answer. He couldn't.

Because deep down, he already knew.

Rhea was gone.

And the war wasn't over.

Not yet.
