The air inside the luxury car was thick with tension.
Lily sat stiffly beside Kai, her fingers absently gripping the hem of her dress, her mind replaying the kiss over and over again. The sensation of his lips on hers, the dominance in his grip, the way he had stolen her breath without warning—it was intoxicating, overwhelming, and worst of all… she had liked it.
No, loved it.
She risked a side glance at Kai. He was as calm as ever, his gaze fixed on the road ahead, his features unreadable.
How could he be so… unaffected?
The silence between them stretched, filling the space with something neither of them were willing to acknowledge out loud. Finally, unable to stand it, Lily forced a casual tone.
"So… are you always this bold?"
Kai smirked, shifting gears as they pulled into the underground parking lot of his penthouse. "When I want something, I take it."
Lily's heart skipped a beat.
Was she something he wanted? Or was she just another plaything to him?
She knew Kai had women around him—powerful, beautiful women who probably had no problem throwing themselves into his arms. But what about her? She wasn't supposed to be one of them.
Yet, here she was… burning up inside just thinking about him.
The Investigation Begins
As soon as they entered the penthouse, Kai's demeanor shifted. The teasing glint in his eyes disappeared, replaced by something colder, sharper—ruthless.
He grabbed his phone and dialed a secure number.
"Report."
A deep voice on the other end responded immediately.
"The attacker wasn't a random thug. We found a traceable payment to his offshore account—someone hired him to test you."
Kai's expression darkened.
"Who?"
"Still digging, but there's a high probability it's linked to Eclipse Syndicate."
So they were watching him. Testing his limits.
Kai's fingers tightened around his phone. They thought they could play games with him?
They had no idea who they were dealing with.
"Double the manpower on surveillance. I want every piece of data on this, and I want it yesterday."
"Understood, sir."
Kai hung up. His mind was already racing, calculating the next move. But before he could think further, he noticed Lily standing nearby, her arms crossed, watching him carefully.
"You're not just some rich guy, are you?" she asked, her voice quieter now. "You… you're involved in something dangerous."
Kai met her gaze, stepping closer. "And yet, you're still here."
Lily's breath caught. Why was she still here?
Everything about Kai screamed danger, control, power—things she should be running away from. But instead, she found herself drawn even deeper.
Lily's Inner Conflict – A Battle of Heart and Mind
Lily tried to distract herself. She poured a glass of wine from the bar, taking small sips to calm her nerves. But nothing could erase the lingering electricity from that kiss.
Her mind was a mess.
Why did he kiss her?Did he actually like her, or was he just toying with her?Was she getting in over her head?
But deep inside, the truth was obvious. She was already falling for him.
The problem was… did Kai feel the same?
She bit her lip, remembering the way he devoured her with his gaze. It was as if he was claiming her.
Could a man like him truly belong to one person?
Her thoughts were interrupted by the sudden ding of the elevator.
She turned—just as the doors slid open.
The Intrusion of a Rival
The moment Veronica Sinclair stepped inside, Lily's stomach twisted.
The woman was gorgeous—long, raven-black hair cascading in perfect waves, a designer suit that hugged her hourglass figure, and a confident smirk that made it clear she owned any room she walked into.
But what made Lily's blood run cold was the way Veronica walked straight up to Kai—like she belonged there.
"Did you miss me, darling?" Veronica purred, her voice smooth as silk as she draped her arms around Kai's neck.
Lily froze.
She expected Kai to push her away immediately. To brush her off like she was nothing.
But instead… he smirked.
The same damn smirk he always gave when he was playing one of his dangerous games.
Lily's fingers clenched.
Why did that bother her so much?
The Power Play – Kai's Silent Message
Kai slowly unwrapped Veronica's arms, his movements controlled, precise.
"Veronica," he said smoothly. "Still as dramatic as ever."
Veronica pouted, stepping back but still eyeing him possessively.
"You've been ignoring my calls, Kai. You're making me feel… unimportant."
Lily felt a flicker of irritation—this woman really thought she was entitled to his attention?
Kai, however, was completely unbothered. "Maybe because you are unimportant."
Veronica laughed, unfazed. "Cold as always. That's what makes you so damn attractive."
Then, her gaze shifted to Lily. And just like that, the mood in the room changed.
She had noticed.
The way Lily stood close to Kai. The way her lips were still slightly swollen from the earlier kiss.
Veronica's smirk widened. "And who is this?"
Lily refused to back down. She squared her shoulders. "Lily."
Veronica hummed. "Cute. Is she another one of your… projects, Kai?"
Lily's temper flared. "Excuse me?"
Kai finally spoke, his voice smooth but warning. "She's none of your business, Veronica."
And just like that, Lily's heart skipped a beat.
He wasn't brushing her off.
He was protecting her.
Veronica narrowed her eyes slightly, sensing the shift in power. She huffed, crossing her arms. "Fine. Keep your secrets. But don't forget, Kai—you still owe me a favor."
With that, she turned on her heels and strutted toward the elevator.
The moment the doors closed behind her, Lily exhaled sharply.
"What was that about?" she asked, trying to sound indifferent.
Kai chuckled. "Jealous?"
Lily scowled. "Absolutely not."
Kai smirked. "Good."
Before she could respond, he leaned in again. Close enough that she could smell his intoxicating cologne.
"Because I have no interest in her." His voice dropped to a whisper. "But you… you're different."
Lily's breath hitched.
Damn him.
