The air was thick with the scent of blood, the echoes of the battle still hanging in the cavernous ruin. Lucas stood over the fallen Hunter Beast, his breath ragged, his body trembling with adrenaline.
His fingers tightened around the stone he used to slay the creature. It still pulsed with a strange, electric energy—almost like it was alive, thrumming under his grip. He could feel the power coursing through him, like a fire that had just been ignited inside his chest.
But the cost was already becoming clear.
His vision blurred, and he stumbled, nearly losing his balance.
"Lucas!"
Elara's voice cut through his haze of exhaustion. He glanced toward her, but his legs betrayed him. His knees buckled, and he fell to the ground.
She rushed to his side, kneeling down beside him. "What the hell was that? You—" She paused, her eyes widening. "Are you okay?"
Lucas barely heard her words. His head spun, the energy from the battle still surging through his veins in a dizzying rush. He felt both alive and completely drained at the same time.
"I—" He swallowed hard, trying to focus. "I don't know… What just happened?"
He looked down at the stone still in his hand. It was no longer just a piece of rubble—it felt like it was connected to him now. A part of him.
"That thing…" Elara whispered, her voice low. "How did you do that? You were nowhere near strong enough to kill it on your own."
Lucas shook his head, his mind racing. He didn't know.
But whatever it was, it was terrifying.
Before he could say anything more, a soft groan echoed through the ruins.
Lucas and Elara both froze.
It came from the Hunter Beast.
"Wait, that's—" Elara started, but the words caught in her throat as she scrambled to her feet, pulling Lucas up with her.
The beast was stirring, blood slowly trickling from its chest as it began to rise. But something was… different.
Instead of the same rage-filled howl, it was now… whimpering.
Lucas' heart skipped a beat. Was it still alive?
Then, from the darkness of the ruin, another sound broke the silence.
Footsteps.
Slow, measured steps that echoed through the chamber, like someone—or something—was coming toward them.
Elara's eyes flicked to the shadows, her expression hardening. "Get ready," she whispered to Lucas. "More of them are coming."
Lucas barely had time to react. A figure emerged from the shadows, tall and imposing.
It was a man, cloaked in black with a hood that shadowed most of his face. His presence was heavy, like the air itself grew dense around him. He was calm—too calm—for someone who had just witnessed the slaughter of a beast like that.
"Impressive," the man said, his voice like gravel. "I didn't expect anyone to take down a Hunter Beast. Certainly not someone like you."
Elara stepped forward, her posture defensive. "Who are you?"
The man didn't answer right away. Instead, he walked slowly toward them, his boots clicking on the stone floor. As he came into the light, Lucas could see the intricate symbols etched into his armor—some kind of ancient, foreign language.
He wasn't from this world.
"You have power," the man said, his eyes narrowing at Lucas. "The kind of power that doesn't belong to someone like you."
Lucas took a step back, instinctively clutching the stone. "I— I don't understand what you mean. I don't know what happened."
The man's lips curled into a small smile. "Oh, you will. You will. But not yet."
He raised his hand.
The ground beneath them shifted, and suddenly, a dark portal opened in the air, swirling with energy.
"Come with me," the man said. "If you want to live."
Elara's eyes shot to Lucas, her face a mixture of confusion and disbelief. "What the hell is this? A trap?"
But the man didn't respond. He simply stepped toward the portal, his presence pulling at Lucas in a way he couldn't explain.
Elara tensed, her hand gripping her dagger. "We're not going anywhere with you."
The man tilted his head, his gaze sharp. "Very well."
He snapped his fingers.
In an instant, the Hunter Beast—still barely alive—leaped at them, snarling, its eyes now glowing with unnatural fury.
"No!" Elara shouted.
But it was too late.
The beast lunged, and the man stepped back, watching with cold amusement.
Without thinking, Lucas raised his hand, the stone pulsing again. His body surged with that same energy, more intense than before, and before he could fully process it, the stone glowed.
A blast of energy shot from his hand, sending the Hunter Beast flying backward, its body crashing into the wall with an audible thud.
For a moment, everything was silent.
The man stared at Lucas in surprise.
"I told you…" he muttered under his breath. "You don't belong here. But you will."
And with that, he stepped through the portal, disappearing into the swirling darkness.
