A familiar face

Chapter 5: A Familiar Face

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows over the cobblestone streets, Lyrian and Elyreina trudged toward the outskirts of the city. Their journey had been arduous, and the weight of recent events pressed heavily upon them. Elyreina clutched a crumpled piece of parchment, the ink barely legible: "Seek out Professor Thaddeus Marlowe."

Arriving at a modest cottage adorned with ivy and surrounded by a garden of rare herbs, Elyreina hesitated before knocking. The door creaked open to reveal an elderly man with a flowing white beard and piercing emerald eyes. For a moment, he stared, then recognition dawned.

"Elyreina? By the stars, it is you!" he exclaimed, pulling her into a warm embrace. "And this must be young Lyrian."

Inside, the cozy interior was filled with the scent of brewing tea and the soft crackle of a hearth fire. They settled around a wooden table, steam rising from their cups.

"Uncle Thaddeus," Elyreina began, her voice trembling, "our village was attacked. Mother and Father... they're gone. And Lyrian..."

Lyrian looked up, his eyes reflecting both fear and hope. "I... I don't have much time left."

Professor Marlowe's expression grew grave. "Elara, what have you done?" he muttered, more to himself than to them.

"You knew our mother well," Elyreina said softly.

"Indeed," he replied, sighing deeply. "Elara was my sister. She was always headstrong, willing to defy the natural order for those she loved."

He turned to Lyrian, his gaze intense yet compassionate. "The spell your mother used is ancient and forbidden. It binds the soul back to the body but at a great cost. Without intervention, your time is limited."

Tears welled in Elyreina's eyes. "Is there nothing we can do?"

Professor Marlowe stroked his beard thoughtfully. "There is a way, but it's perilous. The Arcaneum Institute houses knowledge and resources that might aid us. Tomorrow, I'll take you there to meet Grandmaster Thalor Eldertide. Perhaps together, we can find a solution."

That night, they dined on hearty stew and fresh bread, sharing stories of the past and memories of happier times. Despite the looming uncertainty, the warmth of family provided a brief respite from their fears.
