Heart of Darkness

The air inside the glowing circle was heavy with a strange, electric charge. Marcus could feel it crawling across his skin, making every hair stand on end. Emily stood beside him, her eyes locked on the churning shadows just beyond the light's boundary.

"We need to move," she whispered.

Marcus nodded. "But where?"

Before either of them could answer, the whispers intensified. The words grew clearer, each syllable like ice sliding down his spine.

"Seek the heart… find the key… release the truth…"

The light around them dimmed slightly, and for a moment, Marcus felt a stab of fear.

"What if this light fades?" Emily asked, her voice shaking.

"We can't wait to find out." He pointed to a faint glimmer in the distance—another point of cool, blue light. "That's our next step."

They moved quickly, the safety of the circle shrinking behind them. The darkness pressed closer with every step, the whispers now a chorus of voices—some pleading, others screaming. Shapes flickered at the edges of their vision, but whenever Marcus turned his head, there was nothing.

The ground began to change beneath them, shifting from smooth stone to something softer—like damp earth. The air grew colder still, and the blue light ahead pulsed faster, as though urging them forward.

Then the ground dropped away.

Marcus grabbed Emily's arm just as she slipped, pulling her back from the edge of a vast, yawning chasm. The blue light was on the far side, unreachable from where they stood.

"There's no way across," Emily said.

Marcus scanned the darkness, his mind racing. Then he spotted them—stone pillars rising from the depths, spaced just far enough apart to jump.

"We have to cross," he said.

Without waiting, he leaped to the first pillar. It wobbled slightly under his weight, but held firm. He turned, extending a hand to Emily. "Come on!"

She hesitated only a second before jumping. They moved from pillar to pillar, the whispers rising in pitch with every leap. Halfway across, the shadows surged upward.

"Faster!" Marcus shouted.

The last few jumps blurred together. As they reached the far side, a deafening roar split the air. The chasm began to collapse behind them, stone and darkness tumbling into the void.

They ran toward the blue light. It grew brighter with each step, until they burst into a new clearing—this one dominated by an enormous, pulsating crystal.

"The heart," Emily whispered.

The whispers fell silent.

As they approached the crystal, a deep voice spoke—not a whisper, but a command.

"Who dares seek the truth?"

Marcus stepped forward, his heart pounding.

"We do."

The crystal flashed—and everything went white.
