The reflection smiled—a cold, twisted imitation of Marcus's own face. The abyss rippled beneath them, a void that felt alive, waiting.
"You're not real," Marcus hissed.
"I'm more real than you," the reflection replied. "I am your truth. Your darkness. The part of you you've always feared."
Emily pulled at Marcus's arm. "We have to go!"
But the reflection raised its hand. The cubes pulsed in unison again, and the air around them grew dense and electric.
"Why fight it?" the reflection whispered. "It's already begun. The merging cannot be stopped."
The ground cracked. Tendrils of shadow rose from the abyss, slithering toward them.
Marcus stepped forward. "I won't let this happen."
The reflection tilted its head. "You can't stop it. The choice was made the moment you touched the cube."
A tendril lashed out. Marcus dodged, barely. Emily screamed as another wrapped around her ankle, dragging her toward the edge.
"Emily!" Marcus lunged, grabbing her hand.
The reflection watched, amused. "How far will you go to save her? Would you sacrifice yourself?"
Marcus's heart pounded. The tendrils tightened.
"Let her go!" he roared.
"Then give me the key."
Marcus hesitated.
Emily's grip slipped.
"Don't do it!" she cried.
But the reflection only smiled wider. "Decide, Marcus. Save her, or save yourself."
The cubes spun faster. The void below began to rise.
With a final, desperate look at Emily, Marcus made his choice.
And the world shattered.
