The Final Descent

Marcus woke with a gasp.

The world around him was burning. The black stone cracked and split, flames rising from the fractures. The mist had turned crimson, swirling violently like a storm of blood. And Emily—Emily was gone.

He pushed himself up, every muscle screaming in protest. Vale stood a few feet away, watching with that same infuriating calm.

"Where is she?" Marcus demanded, his voice raw.

Vale tilted his head. "Still fighting, I imagine. But she won't last much longer."

That was it. Marcus surged forward. He didn't think—he just attacked. His fist connected with Vale's jaw, the impact sending a sharp crack through the air. But Vale barely stumbled.

"Brave," Vale said, wiping his lip. "But futile."

The ground shuddered beneath them. More shadows rose from the fractures—twisting, screaming figures, their eyes glowing with hate.

"You've come far, Marcus," Vale said, stepping back. "But you still refuse to embrace what you are."

"I'm nothing like you," Marcus spat.

"Aren't you?" Vale gestured around them. "This world—this chaos—it responds to you. It feeds on your fear. Your anger." His eyes gleamed. "And it's making you stronger."

Marcus shook his head. "I don't want this power."

"But you need it," Vale said softly. "If you want to save her."

The shadows attacked.

Marcus fought like a man possessed. Every blow sent them scattering, but they kept coming. He felt the power building inside him—wild, destructive—but he held it back.

Not yet.

The ground split wide, and from the chasm rose something massive. A creature of shadow and flame, its eyes like twin suns. It roared, and the world shook.

"Embrace it," Vale whispered.

Marcus closed his eyes.

And then he let go.

The power surged through him, cold and relentless. When he opened his eyes, the shadows froze. The massive creature hesitated.

Marcus raised his hand—and the world obeyed.

Flames twisted into spears, impaling the creature. The shadows dissolved in waves of black smoke. And Vale—

Vale was smiling.

"You've finally done it," he said. "But the question remains—can you control it?"

Before Marcus could respond, the ground collapsed.

They fell into the void.
