The air felt thick — suffocating. Marcus's heart pounded in his chest, his gaze locked on Emily's still form. Her blank eyes stared into nothingness, and every second that passed felt like sand slipping through his fingers.
Behind him, Vale's words hung in the air like poison.
"Embrace the darkness… or lose everything."
The darkness inside Marcus stirred — a cold, sharp presence coiled deep within him. He had fought it for so long, denied it, resisted the hunger… but now? Emily's life dangled by a thread, and that thread was slipping fast.
"Why?" Marcus's voice cracked. "Why do you want this so badly?"
Vale's smile was thin and cruel. "Because you were chosen. You were meant for this power. And the world… the world must burn before it can be remade."
"You're insane."
"Am I?" Vale spread his arms. "Tell me, Marcus — look at the world around you. The lies. The pain. The corruption. Doesn't it deserve to be cleansed?"
Marcus's fists clenched. "Not like this."
"Then what will you do?" Vale's eyes gleamed. "Stand there and watch the only person you love fade away?"
He was right. Every second Marcus hesitated, Emily slipped further away. The cold crept closer, and the whispers grew louder.
"Save her…"
"Give in…"
"Let us in…"
Marcus took a step forward — toward Emily. His knees buckled, but he kept moving until he was beside her. He knelt down, brushing a strand of hair from her face.
"Emily…" his voice was barely a whisper. "Please… come back."
But there was no response. No flicker of recognition.
"Time's running out," Vale warned. "Make your choice."
Marcus's vision blurred. His hands shook. The darkness inside him surged, pushing at the edges of his control. He could feel it — raw, untapped power. The key to saving Emily… at a cost he couldn't yet understand.
He closed his eyes.
And then he made his choice.
"I'll do it."
The words tasted like ash on his tongue.
The darkness answered.
It tore through him like fire and ice, an avalanche of power crashing through his veins. The air around him twisted — shadows writhing like living things. The ground cracked beneath his feet.
Marcus opened his eyes — and they burned with black fire.
"Good," Vale whispered, his smile widening. "Now… let's begin."
Emily's body jerked violently. A strangled gasp escaped her lips as her eyes snapped open — but they weren't her eyes. They were filled with blackness, endless and empty.
And she whispered his name.
But it wasn't her voice anymore.
