It's rather chaotic or fascinating this thing they called magic. While the other big things like science and alchemy gave so much trial and error. Magic is unique and very messy.
Let's see the example, now the biggest thing in humanity's science is the development of the steam engine. While in the dwellers, they're able to turn their 'machine' into living beings.
While magic seems not too advanced, it's rather understandable because very few of them worked together. The sense of uniqueness in each other's magic made some separation.
But by now you might ask, can the other race learn about the other's power.
They can! The book says it cannot but I'm able to do it. I was able to cast simple magic and simple alchemy. But the one that peaked my interest more is alchemy, the niche ability to turn one thing into the other.
But I actually just wanna get the complicated one first.
You see, to do a transmutation. You need to know the exact structure of an item. And also, it's worth it.
How much is an item worth? That's rather subjective. It's not like it has a definitive answer as well. It's not as simple as maybe 1 apple transmuted into one lemon. It's more complex that no one has ever done a 'pure' transmutation without the side effect caused by misinterpretation of the item's worth.
But better be trying than imagining, i have an apple here, let's try to turn it into a lemon.
I try to turn an apple into a lemon, I don't have any experience doing this so…it's obvious what happened. It exploded.
"Amaris, what happened?" Mr. Grahambell enters the room, seeing me fall back into the bookcase.
"You tried to transmute an apple? That's dumb, did you even read the book? It's common knowledge that each thing is only specific to its own race. Only Elfians do magic, only Dwellers use transmutation."
"But the castle guards?"
"They are special occasions. As much as having talent comes with the price of a disastrous life."
I sigh, there is no use in learning all of this? Well, what a waste of time…
A few days passed after that, Mr. Grahambell told me I should never use transmutation nor magic. It is prohibited.
Wonder of me, why we cannot use each other's power. You know, if we work together, we could succumb through any suffering.
Today is kinda special, since two days from now, the king will head out and continue to conquer more land. This man…is one heck of a greedy bastard. Because of his leaving, he sends a whole lot of invitations to all his followers.
If that's not interesting, the king's followers actually consist of some Elfians and Dwellers. I thought they wouldn't work together, just as Mr. Grahambell says.
"Is he lying to me?"
No, this couldn't be possible. Maybe I will ask him for an answer.
But I have come to the conclusion that wherever I look, I cannot seem to find him. Huh, it's strange, usually he's very spottable.
I barge the doors of the palace grounds, desperate to look for him. Until it caught someone's attention.
"Greetings little one, what brings you to this place?" an Elfian lady asked me after I barged at the door loudly.
"I'm looking for Mr. Grahambell."
She sighs, "Lowwen, who is this? Is this your kid?"
A few moments later, Mr. Grahambell shows up. Asking for my visit's purpose.
"Did you lie to me about that time?"
He yawns, "what time?"
"The day i exploded your office."
"Well you see, I'm not lying-"
Before he could finish his sentence, I cut him off. I pointed at everyone that was there, 18 people come from different races, the races that 'cannot cooperate' and have some sort of ethnocentrism about their whole race.
"What's up with all these people then huh, what's this?"
"This is different, our existence here means to just have some discussion-"
"No, I know who they are, based on their look. They are the ones who stand beside the king. You lied to me?"
"Ooh, aggressive." The Elfian lady smirks, looking at me shouting at Mr. Grahambell. "You don't fight back?"
"Listen, Amaris, where here not to cooperate. We hate each other, even though I have no right to hate. But the economy needs to keep rotating."
I look down, "I don't understand."
"Sooner or later, you will."
I don't understand why they hate each other. Seeing them not talking and discussing kinda proves that. But why…
Wait, maybe that's it. The last piece I need. They need to be together.
Whatever it is, races that can share thoughts and ideas. We Need each other. Like he just said, if one of the races becomes extinct, chaos will start to erupt because of lots of things. Perhaps…
I took out an apple from my pocket, this is the last piece.
"What are you doing?"
Transmuting an apple into lemon cannot be this close. Nor is it this simple.
"Are you tryna blow us all up?"
Just watch… An apple consists of fructose, glucose, cellulose. malic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid, a whole lot of antioxidants.
A lemon, on the other hand, has a different stuff that it consists of. Lot's of Citric acids, less of malic. Also the vitamins they give are totally different by saying that. Some pieces that differ need to be changed. But there is something missing.
I've transmuted all of this apple's properties, yet, it's not enough. What do I need to know…what other things…
Magic, the Elfians pride. By the books, I was able to simply put, make the mana (source of magic) become one and stable. This is my last try, maybe if i were to use some mana surrounding the apple. I might turn it into a 'currency' for retrieving the last properties I needed.
"I've said this last time Amaris, do not try to transmute things. You cannot do that."
"Wait, Lowwen. This kid…she's solidifying Mana. How can she do that? A mere human"
Almost there, redefining its properties and turning it into similar things. Almost there. By the power of all of them, great things are achieved.
A dweller came to me, I successfully transmuted an apple to a lemon, perfectly. A pure transmutation that the Dwelleres adores, they were humiliated by a mere human, using their powers.
"Impressive, I know you always find interesting things…Arthur Lowwen Grahambell."
