Hakon's POV
The Fear of an Enigma Alpha
After the judgment was delivered and the traitor punished, the entire place erupted in a mix of excitement, some were happy with the judgment, while some were not, as a dark cloud seemed to settle over the palace. The princess and my daughter, the queen, were grieving openly, their sorrow casting a shadow over everything.
These two Omegas don't seem to understand anything, they just can't learn their lessons, an innocent man had just been punished. I really don't see him as innocent, I think he got what he deserved for obeying the command of omegas. And showing an open empathy for a traitor is even an act of treason, I seriously wish the prince or the Alpha king don't see them this way.
Talking about the prince. The mourning of the Queen and the princess was not the only thing that troubled me. There was something else, a feeling, a presence, that had been gnawing at my mind for some time, something coming from our future Alpha king.
I have been thinking about this for a very long time now, it has been something that has been gnawing on me for quite a while, causing me sleepless nights. I have been seeking to find the Alpha King alone, because this discussion is not something anyone must hear, it is for the ear of the Alpha King alone.
Thank the gods and the goddesses, I had managed to find King Harald alone today, away from the presence of his brother, Prince Ragnar. I needed to speak with him, to voice my concerns about the changes I had observed in Ragnar, changes that might cause destruction not just to our pack, but to the entire seven pack.
When I met the Alpha King and told him of my suspicions, findings, and fears, instead of Alpha King Harald to understand me, he only misunderstood me and even tried to remind me of my place in the wolf's hierarchy.
"Hakon, your preoccupation with Ragnar is starting to concern me," Harald said, his tone a warning. "You are a beta, and the Hand of the King, and you know Ragnar is an Alpha and your future king."
I bowed my head in respect. I tried to show him that I knew and understood my place, and I have no plan to contend that. "I mean no disrespect, Your Majesty. I honor our hierarchy, but there is something different about him, something that has not been seen in generations." Even with a level of respect, I still tried to air my thoughts.
Harald sighed, looking tired of this conversation, no doubt weary of my constant objections regarding the prince. "What is it this time, Hakon? Speak plainly."
I hesitated, choosing my words carefully. "My king, if you observe closely, you'll notice the prince exhibits qualities only found in the ancient Enigma Alphas. His strength, his countenance, these are not just what you find in an ordinary Alphas."
Harald's brow furrowed, and his interest finally piqued. "What exactly are you suggesting? And what do you mean by an ordinary Alpha?"
His response, though I had finally gotten his attention, seemed quite angered, almost like I was belittling the Alpha hierarchy. "My king, I am sorry, there is no ordinary Alpha, but think of your brother's achievements," I urged. "He has shown power even beyond yours, which is no small thing, or should I say impossible. He bested you in the contest for the throne, yet did not seize it when he had the chance. He has cowed the Alphas of powerful clans, like the Eiriksdottirs, and his dragon, Caraxes, subdued even the great Cannibal."
Harald's lips curled into a wry smile. "You speak of myths, Hakon. The Enigma Alphas are legend, long gone with ancient Berserkers." He said.
"But what if they're not?" I pressed, feeling the urgency build in my chest. "Thorstein the Conqueror is believed to have been an Enigma Alpha. How else could he have fathered children with Visenya Lodbrok, an Alpha herself?"
Harald scoffed. "Visenya was a Delta, Hakon, not an Alpha. Thorstein was a great leader, but he was no Enigma. You're chasing shadows."
"But what if I am right, what if Prince Ragnar happens to be an Enigma, don't you think it would spell disaster?" I insisted. "He could dominate all others, subdue every king and Alpha. Wars would follow, more devastating than anything we've ever seen."
Harald's patience was wearing thin. "Enough! Stop comparing Ragnar to legends. He is my brother and the future king. He will rule as an Alpha, nothing more." He said, " And if he is an Enigma like you claim, he would have laid it out to my knowledge." He added.
But I could not let this rest. "Your Majesty, if Ragnar truly is an Enigma Alpha, he may not even realize it himself. But when he does, it will be too late for us all. The only way to prevent this catastrophe is to stop him from breeding with your daughter, Princess Astrid."
Harald's eyes narrowed. "You dare suggest preventing the union of my brother and Astrid? You tread dangerous ground, Hakon."
Yet I pushed on, unable to stop. "If Astrid bears him children, they will inherit his powers, causing him to have more Enigmas. The world will be thrown into chaos. I must act now before it is too late."
"So you plan to take matters into your own hands?" Harald's voice was low and dangerous. I knew there and then that this meant the end of the discussion.
I stood up and left. But I will not rest, no, I won't sit and watch till all is destroyed. I will persuade Astrid that Ragnar will reject her bastard children, that he will see them as threats and eliminate them. I will help her avoid pregnancy, by any means necessary. If I must, I will procure moon tea to ensure she does not conceive.
I know I know that I will be risking much with this course, my life, honor, everything. But better my life than the ruin of the seven packs. I cannot allow an Enigma Alpha to bring terror upon us all.
And so, I prepared to set my plan into motion, aware that it might cost me everything. But if it prevented Ragnar from unleashing his power upon the world, it would be a sacrifice worth making.
