Chapter 46: Black turtle, Awakening!

( Black turtle = Xuanwu )

-------------

"You want to duel me?" Lin Yun smiled, his expression rather strange.

He had seen people looking for trouble, but never someone actively seeking a beating!

"What, are you afraid?" Xu Sanshi's voice was low, his tiger-like eyes locked onto Lin Yun. Under the oppressive aura of Lin Yun's Golden Dragon King, a deep black glow flickered in Xu Sanshi's eyes.

Xuanwu bloodline?

Interesting.

"Heh, a poor attempt at provocation. But since you want to fight, then let's fight." Lin Yun casually shook off Xu Sanshi's grip, his tone indifferent.

An overwhelming force instantly pushed Xu Sanshi back three steps. After steadying himself, his expression turned serious.

As Bei Bei's best friend (crossed out) brother, Xu Sanshi had sparred with Bei Bei countless times. He was intimately familiar with Bei Bei's Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon martial soul, and he had even fought against Bei Bei in his awakened Radiant Holy Dragon state.

Yet even then, Bei Bei's strength paled in comparison to Lin Yun's. At the very least, it was absolutely impossible for Bei Bei to casually repel him so easily.

So this is the power of the Golden Dragon, the so-called Ancestor of Strength?

Can I win?

Xu Sanshi asked himself this question, but the answer remained the same—certain defeat!

But so what if he was bound to lose?

For Nan Nan, his wretched life was of no consequence!

"Let's go, see you at the Battle Arena!" Xu Sanshi took a deep breath, turned, and walked away.

Lin Yun shrugged, finishing the grilled fish in his hand before following along. Since someone was practically begging for a beating, a bit of post-meal exercise wouldn't hurt.

Lin Yun and Xu Sanshi had reached an agreement, but someone was decidedly unhappy.

Watching Xu Sanshi entangle himself in her affairs yet again—even going so far as to challenge someone he had just met—Jiang Nannan felt an overwhelming sense of malice. In her mind, Xu Sanshi was practically imprisoning her, interfering with her relationships at will.

"Xu Sanshi! Stop right there!!!" Jiang Nannan screamed, her voice cracking with emotion.

"Who I talk to is none of your business! You and I have nothing to do with each other! Stay away from me!!!"

"Nan Nan..." Xu Sanshi's body stiffened. He stopped walking and slowly turned, his gaze complicated as he looked at the hysterical Jiang Nannan.

"Whether you resent me or hate me, I will never give up on you. No one… will take you away from me!" Xu Sanshi murmured under his breath before turning resolutely toward the Battle Arena, his fighting spirit rising.

He could feel it—his already restless Xuanwu bloodline was craving a fierce battle!

Watching the two figures fade into the distance, tears streamed down Jiang Nannan's face. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed toward the ground. Fortunately, Tang Ya arrived just in time, catching her and gently patting her back.

"Why... Why won't he ever let me go? Why does he haunt me like a ghost?" Jiang Nannan sobbed softly.

Tang Ya sighed helplessly, exchanged a glance with Bei Bei, then helped Jiang Nannan away from the bustling food street, heading back toward the academy.

Fortunately, Lin Yun and Xu Sanshi's duel had drawn away most of the onlookers. Otherwise, even more people would have stayed to watch the drama unfold.

Bei Bei and Tang Ya were always in sync. Seeing Tang Ya's look, Bei Bei nodded knowingly and also made his way to the Battle Arena.

Only those familiar with them knew that the so-called rivalry between Bei Bei and Xu Sanshi—the famed "Twin Stars of the Outer Court"—was just a rumor. In reality, they were the closest of friends.

There was no way Bei Bei would miss Xu Sanshi's duel with Lin Yun.

By the time Tang Ya and Jiang Nannan reached the dormitory, Bei Bei had already arrived at the Battle Arena's waiting room.

"I told you not to be reckless, didn't I? Why did you get hot-headed and challenge him anyway?" Bei Bei asked, looking exasperated as he stared at the silent Xu Sanshi.

"I couldn't accept seeing him with Nan Nan," Xu Sanshi muttered.

"You… Sigh, there's no point talking about it now. You better pray he doesn't go too hard on you." Bei Bei shook his head and sat across from him.

"But honestly, getting a chance to fight him is a great opportunity. Even I'm tempted—I'd love to test the power of the Golden Dragon martial soul myself."

Xu Sanshi ignored Bei Bei's battle-hungry attitude and stood up, walking toward the arena tunnel. The duel was about to begin.

His silhouette didn't look like that of a man heading into a fight.

It looked like someone marching toward his execution.

Bei Bei sighed and left the waiting room, heading to the spectator stands.

By the time Lin Yun stepped onto the stage, Xu Sanshi was already standing opposite him, ready for battle.

"One-on-one Soul Duel! Xu Sanshi, sixth-year outer court student, versus Lin Yun, first-year outer court student. No crippling or lethal attacks allowed. The match ends when one party concedes or loses combat ability," the referee announced loudly.

"Any questions?"

Lin Yun and Xu Sanshi shook their heads.

"Alright then—begin!"

Martial Soul Possession!

Golden light and black light burst forth simultaneously. Lin Yun's right hand transformed into a dragon claw, while Xu Sanshi's right arm bore a heavy shield. Three soul rings shimmered around each of them.

Seeing Lin Yun's completely unorthodox soul ring composition for the first time, Xu Sanshi felt immense pressure.

Only after Lin Yun activated his martial soul did Xu Sanshi truly experience the oppressive might of dragonkind. Especially when Lin Yun directed his hostility at him—Xu Sanshi almost had the urge to kneel in reverence.

Xuanwu?

So what? In the Douluo Continent, dragons reign supreme.

"Come on now, don't just stand there. You challenged me, remember? Or are you really planning to cower behind that turtle shell of yours?" Lin Yun smirked, beckoning with a teasing tone.

Both were at rank 37, but even if Lin Yun gave him one hand, he could still crush Xu Sanshi with ease.

Lin Yun's taunt worked wonders—Xu Sanshi's face flushed red, his eyes bloodshot.

With a deep roar, intense black light engulfed him, two crimson lights flickering like eyes within the darkness.

The black glow might have obstructed an ordinary person's vision, but Lin Yun could clearly see Xu Sanshi's transformation. His already massive shield grew even sturdier, swelling to the size of a door. The twin red glows came from the eyes of a serpent entwined on the shield's surface.

This was Xu Sanshi's trump card—the power hidden deep within his bloodline.

Xuanwu Awakens!

The black glow gradually dissipated, revealing the newly evolved Xuanwu Shield and a taller, more imposing Xu Sanshi.

"Now this is getting interesting. Come!"

  1. Xuanwu, one of the Four Symbols in ancient Chinese Mythology, also known as the Tortoise-Snake, is a spiritual entity composed of a combination of a tortoise and a snake. Representing the north, in the Bagua it corresponds to 'Kan(坎)' and in the Five Elements, it governs water. Symbolizing the old yin among the Four Symbols & winter among the four seasons, it is also the northern land of heaven. Its name 'Xuan' means black, while the pictogram 'Wu' signifies 'martial' or 'warrior,' hence it is sometimes referred to as the Black Warrior of the North. Legend has it that the Xuanwu is both long-lived and knowledgeable in yin and yang, capable of freely traversing the underworld, earning great reverence in Daoism.
