Kael's breath was still heavy from the battle against the Revenant Knight, but there was no time to rest. The warrior who had judged their first trial motioned for them to follow through a massive iron doorway leading deeper into Elderspire's proving grounds.
"The first trial was to test your combat prowess," the warrior announced as they stepped forward. "The second will test your mind and spirit. The Labyrinth of Echoes awaits."
Renn wiped sweat from his brow and scoffed. "I've never been good with puzzles. Let's hope this isn't just some elaborate maze."
The two stepped through the iron doorway, and the moment they crossed the threshold, the world around them shifted. What had once been the dimly lit halls of Elderspire became an endless expanse of twisting corridors. The walls pulsed with shimmering Ether, reflecting distorted images of themselves. The floor beneath them was smooth, black stone, like walking on a reflection of the night sky.
Kael turned to look at Renn, but his friend had already taken a cautious step forward. "We stick together. No splitting up."
"Agreed," Kael said. "Let's move."
They ventured deeper into the labyrinth, their steps echoing strangely, as if the walls were whispering their movements back at them. At first, the path seemed straightforward, but as they turned a corner, they were met with three identical corridors, each one stretching into infinity.
"Great. Which way?" Renn muttered.
Kael closed his eyes and reached out with Etherflow. The energy of the labyrinth pulsed around him, its essence tangled with echoes of those who had come before. He felt their presence—faint, lingering memories of past challengers. Then, a whisper reached his mind.
"Only those who walk in the footsteps of the fallen may find the way forward."
Kael opened his eyes. "We take the left path."
Renn frowned. "And you're sure?"
"I trust my Etherflow."
Renn exhaled and nodded. "Then let's go."
They moved through the leftmost passage, the shimmering walls reflecting not just their images but something… off. Kael caught glimpses of himself in the reflections, but not as he was now. In one, he looked older, battle-worn, his eyes filled with an unshakable determination. In another, he was a child, staring back at him with wide, unknowing eyes.
The deeper they walked, the more the labyrinth twisted their perception of reality. Voices echoed from the walls—some familiar, some not.
"You will forget yourself if you go too far."
Kael clenched his fists. He had heard those words before, but from where?
Suddenly, the path ahead shifted, the walls folding in on themselves like a living entity. The corridor darkened, and the whispers grew into a cacophony of voices. Kael and Renn halted as figures emerged from the reflections—phantom-like entities of themselves.
"This can't be good," Renn muttered, gripping his daggers.
The reflections stepped forward, mirroring their stances, their weapons gleaming with an unnatural glow. Kael locked eyes with his own doppelgänger, a cold, empty stare meeting his own.
Then they attacked.
Kael barely managed to block the first strike as his own mirrored self lunged at him, Etherblade clashing against Etherblade. The force of the impact sent shockwaves through the corridor. Renn was locked in battle with his own reflection, their daggers moving at lightning speed in perfect synchronicity.
"They're copying our movements!" Renn shouted as he barely dodged a strike. "How do we fight ourselves?!"
Kael gritted his teeth. He had faced countless warriors, but never himself. Every move he made, the reflection countered perfectly. Every strike he attempted was met with equal force.
Then it hit him.
"We stop fighting like ourselves," Kael said.
Renn glanced at him between dodging another blow. "What?"
Kael didn't respond. Instead, he abandoned his usual form, letting go of the style ingrained in him. Instead of a precise Etherblade strike, he moved unpredictably, shifting into an unorthodox stance he had absorbed from an enemy long ago. His reflection faltered for a split second—just enough for Kael to drive his blade through its chest.
The reflection shattered into nothingness.
Renn, realizing the trick, grinned. "Guess I'll have to get creative."
Instead of using his daggers, he dropped low and struck his reflection with a move he had once mocked Kael for—a sweeping kick. His reflection hesitated, and Renn took the chance to drive his blade into its form. The doppelgänger dissolved into shards of light.
The moment their enemies fell, the whispers in the labyrinth ceased. The shimmering walls stilled, and ahead of them, a golden door appeared, radiating a soft glow.
Kael and Renn exchanged glances.
"That was… unsettling," Renn muttered.
Kael nodded, still unsettled by the echoes of his past and future selves. "Let's keep moving."
They stepped through the golden doorway, leaving the Labyrinth of Echoes behind.
Awaiting them on the other side was another warrior of Elderspire, clad in gleaming armor. "You have passed the second trial," he announced. "But the true test of Elderspire is yet to come."
Kael clenched his fists. He had a feeling the hardest part was still ahead.
