The church was protected by the soldiers recruited by the government.
It was common knowledge.
To ensure the safety of the churches, the government recruits and trains special forces.
For them, the church and its members are extremely important. They are a national asset, whom they must protect for several reasons.
To trespass the security of the church, they needed to locate all the traps first. And that...was not possible to do, especially under such darkness.
That's why, Victor was setting up an EMP inside the forest.
It was a small device the size of a tennis ball, which can disrupt electronic devices within the range of one mile.
"This will work right?" Carlisle asked, a frown marring his face.
This was the first time he had seen an EMP of this size. The one he used was more of a capsule size, that's why it seemed kind of ancient.
Victor assured his brother, "This is lab-tested, and I have used it several times in the past. Don't worry."
Carlisle nodded, before he turned towards Shelly, "You know what you need to do, right? And the risk it contains?"
Shelly nodded, "I know." Her serious expression didn't allow him to ask any further before he turned towards his brother.
Victor reminded him, "If I find things going out of hand, I will pull you away, okay?"
Carl nodded, "I know. Then if you are ready?"
Victor heaved a long sigh. He was taking too much risk here. However, he had come too far to reconsider his decision.
As such, "Here goes nothing,"
*Click*
Just as he pressed the small button in the middle of the dial, a wave erupted from the machine that wasn't blocked by trees and traveled around the area.
"Carl," Victor called out before both brothers immediately disappeared into the shadows and hid behind a tree.
Wordlessly, they both covered their faces with a white mask with two slits for eyes.
Shelly didn't wait for the signal and after draping the cloth over her head, she picked the EMP shell and began to run.
*Rustle*
The sound of footsteps echoed as the guards advanced towards the source of the disturbance.
"Hey, you!" One of them caught the sight of the small girl running through the forest.
Just as Shelly realized that she was spotted, she actually began to run—at an inhumane pace
"Catch her!" The chief guard cried as he fortified his body with mana, and dashed in her direction.
The number of guards exceeded half a dozen, and all of them were pursuing the girl.
Because Shelly was covering her ears, they didn't realize that she was an elf—as such, using their magic to capture her seemed an efficient method.
However, when it's a battle between magic levels, not in a thousand years, humans would surpass elves.
Victor glanced at his younger brother before giving him the signal.
Carl nodded before he ducked low and took out a knife from his sock.
He and Victor moved toward the church silently, while keeping their head low.
There were still about seven guards around the perimeter, and without taking care of them, entering the church was impossible.
Thankfully, the EMP would prevent them from alerting others.
Victor and Carlisle moved like shadows, their steps light, their presence nearly nonexistent. The night was their ally, masking their approach as they slipped through the darkness.
Carlisle spotted a guard near the church wall, gripping his rifle tightly.
Carlisle used his height (5'2) to his advantage and appeared behind the man.
*Dhak*
An accurate kick behind his knee brought the man down before Carlisle covered the man's mouth and stabbed him in the collarbone.
The man withered and tried fighting back, but Carlisle was augmenting his arm so the resistance didn't work.
On the other side, Victor was faster and quicker than Carl.
Victor moved with lethal precision. He darted between shadows, his knife flashing under the dim lantern light. A guard turned at the last second—too late.
Shhff!
Victor's blade sliced across his forearm before he drove it into the man's side. The paralysis kicked in instantly. The guard gasped, stiffening as his legs buckled.
Carlisle wiped his dagger clean and turned to see another guard near the entrance, cautiously advancing with his rifle raised. The moment the man looked toward Victor, Carlisle acted.
With a swift step, he leaped onto the wooden railing and kicked off, launching himself at the guard's back.
Thud!
The impact sent them both crashing to the ground. Before the guard could yell, Carlisle pressed a knife to his throat.
"Make a sound, and I'll cut deeper," he whispered.
The man trembled, his grip loosening on his weapon. Carlisle didn't hesitate—he drove his knife into the man's shoulder, letting the paralysis take hold before rolling off him.
Victor nodded in appreciation as he smoothly slit the chest of the man who appeared from behind.
"Good work, Carl. When did you learn combat?"
Carl didn't stop to speak, as he shot the blade towards the incoming man, impaling his head, as he said, "Just learned through books."
The two brothers were coordinating with each other in putting down the guards who came their way, or they took the initiative to silence them.
Throughout the operation, Victor's eyes were on his younger brother.
The way he was using his magic and showing such assassination skills... was phenomenal for a boy of his age.
'Seriously, if we had focused on his skills, then by this age...' Victor was now slightly regretting restricting Carl all these years.
However, looking at the boy right now, Victor knew that there was no stopping him.
"Let's head inside," Carl muttered, as he finished the last one and cleaned his knife on the clothes of the fallen guard.
They refrained from killing them as much as they could, but well, not all of them were lucky.
Victor held Carl's shoulders before telling him, "Before we go inside, I need you to know something about the churches and how they operate."
Carl raised his brows, unsure why the man was suddenly bringing that up.
Victor explained, "You might be shocked to find it abruptly so I am telling you now...the church members don't produce vitality out of thin air-"
"They transfer it from one entity to another, right? I guessed it a long time ago." Carlisle simply responded. The only reason the church members crave elves is that not only are they easy to tame, but elves also have a high mana count, so they are used as power suppliers.
Victor nodded, barely suppressing his shock. He really couldn't surprise his brother these days at all.
"Okay then, let's go, Carl."
