Julian Blackwood hated public events. Charity galas, shareholder receptions they were all the same: polished smiles hiding sharpened knives. Yet, tonight's gala was unavoidable. Blackwood Enterprises was sponsoring the city's largest philanthropic fundraiser, and his presence was expected.
Dressed in a sleek black tuxedo, Julian moved through the lavish ballroom with practiced indifference. Crystal chandeliers cast a golden glow over the city's elite billionaires, politicians, and celebrities all eager to rub shoulders with power.
"Mr. Blackwood," a familiar voice drawled. Marcus Reed, his business partner and longtime confidant, approached with a glass of bourbon in hand. "Charming as ever."
Julian arched a brow. "Let's not pretend either of us wants to be here."
Marcus chuckled. "True. But the press loves a good billionaire doing charity act. Speaking of which watch your back. Rumor has it a certain journalist is sniffing around."
Julian's expression hardened. "Let them try."
Across the room, Emily Taylor slipped past the velvet ropes with ease, her press badge tucked discreetly beneath the lapel of her midnight-blue dress. She wasn't there to admire the luxury she was there for him.
Julian Blackwood.
After weeks of research, this was her chance to see the man behind the empire. Her editor wanted a feature, but Emily wanted something bigger proof of corruption. And she was willing to get close to find it.
Her gaze landed on him—tall, imposing, and every bit as arrogant as the headlines suggested. Yet there was something else a quiet intensity beneath the cold façade.
"You're staring," Mia whispered, nudging her arm.
Emily shook off the thought. "He's just another story."
But as she stepped forward, her heel caught on the edge of the carpet. In a heartbeat, she stumbled straight into the last person she wanted to touch.
Strong hands caught her waist, steadying her.
"Careful," a deep, velvet voice murmured.
Emily looked up and into the piercing blue eyes of Julian Blackwood.
For a moment, the world around them faded.
"Are you always this graceful?" he asked, a smirk curling his lips.
Emily's heart pounded, but she met his gaze with fire. "Only when billionaires get in my way."
Julian's smile didn't reach his eyes. "Then you must be Emily Taylor."
He knew her.
And in that moment, both of them realized this was just the beginning.
