Sparks and Sharp Edges

Emily straightened herself, ignoring the warmth lingering where Julian's hands had steadied her. She wasn't about to be flustered by a billionaire with a god complex.

"So, you know my name," she said coolly. "I'm flattered."

Julian's lips curved into a slow, deliberate smile. "I make it a point to know anyone who takes an interest in my company especially those who dig where they don't belong."

His tone was smooth, but there was an unmistakable edge beneath it. A warning.

Emily tilted her head, refusing to be intimidated. "Public interest is everyone's business. Or do you have something to hide, Mr. Blackwood?"

Amusement flickered in his eyes, but it didn't soften the steel in his posture. "Curiosity is a dangerous habit, Ms. Taylor. But I imagine you already know that."

Before she could respond, a voice interrupted.

"Julian!" Marcus Reed strolled up, his smile too polished, too knowing. His gaze lingered on Emily just a beat too long. "And who's your lovely companion?"

Emily offered a professional smile. "Emily Taylor. The Manhattan Post."

Recognition flashed across Marcus's face. "Ah, the journalist with a reputation for getting under people's skin."

"I'm just doing my job," she replied, her tone crisp.

Julian watched her with quiet fascination. Most people bent under his scrutiny she pushed back. And he wasn't sure whether he found that irritating or intriguing.

Marcus chuckled, sipping his bourbon. "Be careful, Julian. She might uncover all your secrets."

Julian's gaze never left Emily's. "Let her try."

A challenge. One she couldn't resist.

"I plan to," she said softly, her confidence unwavering.

Without another word, she turned and walked away, her head held high. But Julian's voice, low and smooth, followed her.

"We'll see about that, Ms. Taylor."

As she disappeared into the crowd, Julian exhaled slowly, his usual detachment shaken. For years, he had built walls no one could breach.

But Emily Taylor?

She might be the exception.

And for the first time in a long time, he wasn't sure if that was a threat or a temptation.
