A Dangerous Proposition

The next morning, Emily arrived at the New York Sentinel newsroom, her mind still tangled with thoughts of Julian Blackwood. The bustling energy of the office usually grounded her but not today.

She dropped her bag on her desk and flipped open her laptop, scanning through the latest corporate filings. Solstice Holdings remained a ghost no clear ownership, no public records connecting it to Blackwood Enterprises. Yet, she knew Julian was hiding something. She just had to find it.

"Burning the candle at both ends, Taylor?" a familiar voice teased.

Emily looked up to see Daniel leaning against her desk, a fresh coffee in hand. "You look like you barely slept."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence," she said dryly, accepting the coffee. "Anything on Solstice?"

He slid a folder toward her. "Not much. But I did find this an unlisted subsidiary in the Cayman Islands. Shell company, but the money trail leads right back to Blackwood's boardroom."

Emily's heart raced as she scanned the document. This was the break she needed. "If we connect this to the land acquisitions last year, we could have him."

"Maybe," Daniel said, lowering his voice. "But Julian Blackwood doesn't strike me as the type to let anyone get the upper hand. And if he invited you to dinner, he's playing a long game."

Emily knew he was right. Julian wasn't the kind of man who did anything without an agenda. And she was walking a fine line between exposing the truth and falling into his trap.

Before she could respond, her phone buzzed. A message from an unknown number.

Unknown: Meet me at Club Monarch. 8 PM. I have information you want.

Emily's eyes narrowed. Club Monarch was an exclusive, members-only lounge and exactly the kind of place where billionaires conducted business in the shadows.

Daniel peered at her phone. "You sure you want to follow this lead?"

"I have to," she said, determination burning in her chest.

Whoever sent the message knew something and if she wanted to bring down Julian Blackwood, she couldn't afford to ignore it.

But deep down, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was stepping straight into the lion's den.
