RUMOR OF THE LAST DRAGON EGG

~{INGRID'S POV}~

*

"Whatever rumor you heard about a dragon egg existing somewhere is true."

At that confirmation from our Luna, a loud chatter filled the hall as everyone shared their thoughts on it until she lifted her hand to silence us.

"It's not just an empty rumor because I and the other leaders did our research and found out in the books our ancestors wrote that the last dragon egg would exist in our time." She further said and my nerves became frantic at the thought of meeting a dragon and having a taste of its blood and flesh for the first time. Wouldn't that be a delight?

I was already reminiscing about its taste when she went further.

"...I and other packs have joined hands with the motive of catching this dragon. There are five great forests but we believe that the dragon lies in one of them so therefore, everyone will have to go out in search of it," she announced and I could feel my palms go sweaty as my senses went sharp.

"Every one of you from the highest in authority to the lowest of lycanthrope will hunt for this dragon and whoever finds this dragon will have a greater share, be it its blood, scales or even flesh," she said and everyone began to cheer in excitement with me included.

"But that's not all. The winning werewolf or team will have the privilege of dining with the Alpha and I. And his or her position will be elevated," she added.

I couldn't believe this was happening. Not only was I given the opportunity to have a taste of greatness but I was also given a chance to prove myself to other werewolves higher than I due to the titles and abilities being passed down to them.

In the Lycanthrope book of hierarchy and ranks, the Alpha and Luna were the highest followed by the Omega, Beta, Gamma and finally, the lowest of all, the Theta.

"So my fellow Lycanthrope, prepare yourselves. The hunt begins tomorrow at dawn," our Luna announced in conclusion and I screamed at the top of my voice with the others in glee.

Before dawn even arrived, I had already eagerly packed the necessary things I would need including a dagger in case I would need it. I smiled at that thought.

"Ingrid, are you sure you want to do this?" My eldest brother asked and I nodded in happiness.

"I feel like I was born for this brother. This is our time to shine," I excitedly said and he sighed.

He already found his mate and they were living happily with their little ones. All my life, I had dreamt of meeting my mate and not long ago I clocked the age of having a mate but something greater now took over my mind; The thought of being the first to catch the last dragon and earning such privilege from the Alpha and Luna.

"You could get killed," he voiced out his concerns.

"I won't," I confidently said.

"This isn't just any contest, Ingrid, it's a battle. Imagine being the first to find the dragon only for other werewolves from other packs to gang up against you and kill you especially since you're a Theta wolf with no significance," he stated the obvious and I sighed.

I had thought about all that which is why I was going prepared.

With a bold facade, I walked up to my brother and placed a hand on his shoulder while looking him directly in the eye.

"I've got this brother. Believe in me," I said and he sighed before looking away.

"Promise me you'll come back alive even though you don't get to find it."

"I promise," I said.

"And promise me you won't fight others for it," he said and I smiled.

"I won't," I firmly said, causing him to sigh and pull me in for a deep hug.

"I'm gonna miss you," he said.

"I won't be long," I said and hugged him back.

When we pulled away from each other, I smiled and picked up my bag as I got ready to leave.

"Take care little wolf," he waved and I waved back before running out of the house so I could catch up with the others.

"INGRID!"

At my brother's call, I turned around and watched him wave forcefully at me while looking as though he would break down any moment.

I waved back and chuckled.

"Be safe!" He shouted.

"I will!" I said and sprint off before he would change his mind. He had raised me ever since our mother left us once she got a new mate who was a high ranking Lycanthrope.

When I got to the center of the pack where everyone had gathered, I tried to mingle with anyone but no one was ready to mingle, especially with a lowly she-wolf like me. But that didn't deter me from going on this hunt. It was even for the best.

And while we were waiting for the royal commander to tell us what to do and what not, someone approached me.

"I never would've expected you to take up this hunt," he said and I smiled without bothering to look his way because I knew who he was even before he spoke due to his pleasant rich boy scent.

"Why? Because I look weak?" I asked back.

"Well, that's one reason," he said.

"Are you sure you're cut out for this rich boy?"

I asked and glanced at him while eyeing him up and down, causing him to laugh at my indirect insult.

"You're built for it but I'm not sure if your willpower is strong," I challenged him.

"Watch me beat you fair and square, little wolf," he said and I smiled even more.

He was my step brother from the same mother and a Beta wolf but I was a year older than him.

"Dream on pretty boy."

And just as I said that, the royal commander climbed the platform in the middle of the city where we had gathered.

"Gather around everyone," he said in a loud voice and I inched closer as my senses heightened so I wouldn't miss any information.

"The Alpha congratulates you all for taking part in this contest. Many of you will fail and only one will return victorious. But I want you all to note that once you leave this pack, you are responsible for yourselves. If you want to team up then that's good for you but if not then fine."

"Let's team up," my step brother, Joseph, whispered to me but I simply pushed him aside as I focused on what the royal commander was saying.

"...once more, the dragon should be brought in unscathed. If it's brought in dead, you'll face the consequences and won't be given any privilege as mentioned yesterday by our beloved Luna." He stressed on that and I nodded in understanding.

"Once you leave this territory, begin hunting. Don't delay and avoid getting into danger by all means," he finally said and blew his horn, signalling us to leave.

Almost immediately, everyone ran towards the gate and so did I without having an inklin

g where I would start from. I didn't even have a map.
