The Sanctuary was unlike anything Kaelen had ever seen. Beyond its towering gates, the filth and decay of Vael'Zyrenn's slums felt like nothing more than a distant memory. Inside, the air was crisp, laced with the scent of wildflowers and the faint traces of burning incense. Ancient stonework stretched towards the heavens, seamlessly woven with overgrown wines and shimmering silver sigils that pulsed with a faint ethereal light. This was a place untouched by the corruption of the outside world, a sanctuary in the truest sense.
Kaelen's steps faltered as he took in the surroundings, the contrast between where he had been mere moments ago and where he now stood leaving a hollow ache in his chest. Rina walked beside him, her fingers brushing the worn fabric of her tunic, eyes darting between the towering spires and the cloaked figures that gilded through the towering spires and the cloaked figures that gilded through the open courtyard like ghosts.
A procession of robed figures moved in quiet reverence along a stone pathway, each carrying bowls of water, their features serene and unreadable. Further ahead, a massive statue of a women bathed in silver light stood at the heart of the courtyard. Her expression was sorrowful yet benevolent, and in her hands she help a basin overflowing with water that shimmered like liquid starlight.
"This is where we part ways," the hooded figure from before intoned, their voice calm yet firm. "You may seek refuge within these walls, but your past does not belong here. Should you bring the burdens of the outside world within, you will find the Sanctuary far less forgiving."
Kaelen barely head them. His attention had been drawn to a presence deeper within the Sanctuary, a sensation tugging at something long and buried with in him. Something that made his pulse quicken and his breath shallow.
Rina nudged him, snapping him back to reality. "You alright?" She whispered, her voice barely audible above the murmurs of the clergy.
He exhaled slowly. "Yeah. Just... taking it all in."
She frowned but said nothing more. The weight of exhaustion pulled at both of them, and as much as Kaelen wanted answers, he know that sleep had to come first. The hooded figure gestured toward a corridor leading deeper in to the sanctuary. "Rooms have been prepared for you. Rest while you can. Tomorrow, your place within these walls will be determined."
Kaelen and Rina exchanged a glance before silently following the guide through the marble hallways, their footsteps echoing softly. Ornate murals lined the walls, depicting celestial being locking in eternal struggle. Serpent of shadow entwined with luminous dragons, figures crowned with halos battling wraiths wreathed in abyssal fire.
The deeper they went, the stronger the pull became.
Something was waiting for him here.
And he would soon find out what.
