Over the next few days, aside from morning and evening greetings, Dashiell didn't send me any other messages.
And I never asked about it.
Perhaps he was too immersed in his romantic bliss, and he didn't seem to care whether I replied or not, sending his routine good morning and good night messages every day.
Until the early morning of the day he was leaving, maybe out of a surge of guilt, Dashiell suddenly sent a long, rambling message reminiscing about our past.
I had no desire to read it and was about to turn off my screen to get some sleep when another message from Dashiell popped up.
"Darling, I miss you."
"Even though I know you can't see this right now, I still want to say, I love you."
"Good night, sweet dreams."
I couldn't help but sneer.
Telling me you love me while in another woman's bed, Dashiell, don't you find that disgusting?
This act of feigned affection, you can keep performing it alone from now on.
Early in the morning, I carefully arranged the birthday cake I had prepared and placed the gift box I had readied on the most visible spot on the living room coffee table.
After taking one last look at this home, I walked out the door without a hint of nostalgia.
In the car on the way to the airport, Dashiell suddenly called.
"Darling, did you forget what day it is today?""
I looked out the car window at the rapidly retreating scenery and softly said, "Happy birthday, Dashiell."
The displeasure in his voice quickly vanished.
"I knew you couldn't have forgotten. It's just that you usually send your wishes right on the dot, but this time you were so quiet..."
"Don't tell me you're secretly preparing a surprise for your husband."
I chuckled, "That's right, I've prepared a surprise you'll never forget..."
Hearing this, a smile tugged at Dashiell's lips.
He glanced at the flight information display at the airport. His flight back to New York City would be taking off soon.
Serenity would never guess he was flying back a day early.
Thinking of this, the smile in Dashiell's eyes deepened.
It was his birthday, after all. He had to spend it with his darling.
After his birthday, he'd take her on a trip. It had been so long since they'd traveled together.
Their first stop would be Lake Tahoe, a place she'd been wanting to visit for ages...
"Serenity, wait for me—!"
"!!"
Before he could finish speaking, a sudden loud crash came through the receiver, followed by the sound of a phone hitting the ground.
"Serenity? What happened?!"
"Serenity!!""Answer me!!!"
Dashiell called out Serenity's name over and over, but no one responded. The receiver was filled with chaos.
Then came the sound of ambulance sirens.
"Sir, are you the husband of the person involved? Your loved one has been in a car accident..."
