The place where Jack and Tom lived was called Sunshine Apartment. It got this name because the exterior walls of this apartment building were painted a bright yellow. An apartment building of this color was unique in the whole city.
Sunshine Apartment only had two floors. It was located on a street-facing position and was in a prosperous urban area, so the location was quite good. On the first floor was a savings office of the sub-branch where Jack worked, and on the second floor was the dormitory where Jack and Tom lived.
Many people had lived in Sunshine Apartment before, but now only Jack and Tom were left here. However, the only one who was really eligible to live here was Jack. Tom's home was in the city, but for some reason, he was willing to live here.
Well, if he wanted to live here, that was fine, but Jack had to fall asleep every day smelling the stench of Tom's smelly socks. After the two of them went downstairs one after another, Jack suddenly grabbed Tom and said seriously, "Tom, if you still want to live here in the future, you're not allowed to leave your smelly socks in the room."
Tom was taken aback for a moment and then asked, "Is it smelly? Why can't I smell it?"
"Don't you know you have rhinitis?"
"I know. I'm just asking you if it's smelly."
Jack didn't bother to argue with him and quickened his pace forward.
Sunshine Apartment was very close to the place where Jack worked. It took less than ten minutes to walk there.
The shops on the street looked both familiar and unfamiliar, and Jack kept looking around. Tom first went to buy coffee and donuts and then trotted a few steps to catch up.
Jack looked at the breakfast in his hand and suddenly laughed. Tom didn't understand why and asked him what he was laughing at.
Jack told him, "It's scary to think that a person has been having coffee and donuts for breakfast for more than twenty years. Don't you think so?"
Tom gave him a dirty look and said, "It can be scary, and it can also not be scary. But if I had to have coffee and donuts for breakfast for twenty years, I'd rather die."
"Why? Don't coffee and donuts taste good?"
"Don't sandwiches and muffins taste good? Isn't the hotel's buffet breakfast delicious? Why do I have to stick with coffee and donuts?"
Jack smiled and didn't say anything more. Ahead, they could already see the building of the sub-branch. It didn't look much different, but it was much newer and a bit taller than the last time Jack saw it before his rebirth.
The two of them entered the yard through the side door in the backyard and saw Chief Security Officer Henry standing in the yard with a dark face.
Most of the people Jack met on the way didn't look happy. The reason, of course, was related to the bombing of the embassy.
As soon as Henry saw the two of them come in, he shouted loudly, "Can't you two arrive ten minutes earlier? You're dawdling. You don't look like security personnel at all."
Jack ignored his shouting and just looked at him. But Tom couldn't stand it anymore. He pointed at the watch on his wrist and said, "It's seven o'clock. We start work at seven. Are we late?"
Henry was a veteran. He couldn't stand Tom, who had also been in the army but was still lazy. He was a bit more polite to Jack, who came from an educational background.
As soon as Tom finished speaking, Jack thought Tom was going to be in trouble. Sure enough, Henry completely lost his temper and started scolding Tom loudly.
"It's true that we start work at seven, but it's seven o'clock and one minute now. If this were on the battlefield, I could shoot you for being just one minute late—"
Tom was not convinced and started arguing with Henry in the yard. Jack didn't bother to pay attention to them and looked around with a curious look. After looking around, seeing that the two of them were still arguing, Jack suddenly said, "Aren't we going to deliver the money today?"
Upon hearing this, the two of them immediately stopped arguing, quickly went to the armory to get their guns, and then went to the vault together.
When everything was ready, and together with the people from the vault and a female cashier who was going to ride along, they moved the money boxes to the yard. Then, everyone was stunned. The place where the armored car should have been parked was empty, and there was no sign of the armored car at all.
Now Henry was in a hurry. He glanced at Jack and the others and then shouted at Tom, "Where's the car? Where has the car gone?"
Tom was also in a hurry and shouted back at him, "How should I know where the car has gone? I'm not in charge of the car."
As soon as Henry turned his face towards Jack, before he could shout, Jack preempted him and said, "Hurry up and call the driver. No, page him."
Henry seemed to come to his senses and quickly took out a black mobile phone from his handbag and then dialed a series of numbers.
It was almost unheard of for the armored car not to be seen early in the morning, but it happened this morning. Everyone was suddenly flustered. The most anxious one was Henry, who was in charge of the escort work. If the business funds couldn't be delivered to each savings office or were delivered late, the president would eat him alive.
There were a total of three mobile phones equipped throughout the bank. One was in the hands of the president, one was in the hands of the director of the deposit department, and the last one was in Henry's hands. With such emphasis on security work, once something went wrong, the president would definitely not let Henry off.
Now Jack looked at this hand-held phone that was like a black brick and thought that this thing must cost tens of thousands of dollars at this time. It was so big and clumsy, and it could only be used for making and receiving calls.
However, Jack knew that these black bricks would soon be replaced by lightweight digital phones.
A few minutes passed, and Henry dialed that series of numbers several more times, and then he started cursing, "He didn't reply to the page. I think he doesn't want to work anymore. Let me see how I deal with him—"
Jack sat on a money box a bit bored. Seeing that Henry was as anxious as an ant on a hot pan, he said slowly, "Check if the armored car is in the underground garage. If it is, just find someone else to drive it—"
Before he could finish his sentence, Henry ran towards the entrance of the underground garage like a rabbit—
After a while, Henry came back, holding the key to the armored car in his hand. "The key was in the car, but the person is gone."
Jack smiled and said to him, "Excuse me, Chief Henry. Why don't you play the role of a driver today?"
But as soon as he said this, Jack felt that this wasn't the right thing to say. This was 1999, and there weren't many people who could drive.
Sure enough, Henry started shouting at Jack again, "Are you making fun of me? You know I can't drive, yet you still say that. Are you doing it on purpose?"
Jack sat on the money box, dodging Henry's spit, and quickly apologized, "Oh, Chief Henry, I didn't mean to make fun of you. I just forgot that you still can't drive now."
Henry didn't notice anything wrong with these words and was still angry at Jack. It was Tom and the other two people from the vault who were secretly laughing.
Time passed minute by minute, and more than a dozen money boxes were still piled up in the yard, and the few of them could only wait. When Jack thought it was almost time, he shouted at Henry, who was spitting everywhere, "All right, all right. Can I drive, okay?"
As soon as these words were out, everyone was stunned.
After a moment of stunned silence, Henry was the first to ask, "You, can you drive?"
Jack nodded, thinking that driving an armored car should be similar to driving a car.
Tom asked, "You can drive? Why didn't I know that?"
Jack glanced at him and said, "Do you think you know everything?"
Henry still didn't believe that Jack could drive and asked again, "Do you have a driver's license?"
"What driver's license?"
"A driver's license."
Jack shook his head. "No."
"No—"
Henry smacked his lips and started to be in a dilemma.
Seeing his hesitant look, Jack took the bunch of keys from his hand, looked at the logo on them, and then said, "Is driving that difficult? I'll play the role of a driver today."
