Nolan suddenly became flustered, standing up and rushing towards the door while still trying to comfort her emotions.
"Don't worry, Serenity. Nolan will be there soon."
From beginning to end, I seemed like nothing but thin air to Nolan, neither cared for nor missed.
Just as Nolan opened the door,
He turned his head, speaking to me as if bestowing some great favor: "You can come along too."
"After all, it's our wedding anniversary. I can't just leave you alone at home."
Due to family issues, I grew up starved for affection, always afraid of being abandoned.
In the past, no matter where Nolan went, I always had to ask for details, and if circumstances allowed,
I'd turn into a little shadow trailing behind him.
But such opportunities were few and far between. Nolan would always use work as an excuse to brush me off, refusing my company.
Back then, I foolishly believed his words.
Until one time, I saw with my own eyes the supposedly swamped-with-work Nolan leisurely strolling through a mall with Serenity.
That's when it finally dawned on me.
When someone truly loves you, they'll always make time for you in their heart.
Snapping back to reality, I looked up at the visibly impatient Nolan and softly said, "I'm not going."Nolan's words fell, and amidst his shock, an inexplicable anger grew in his heart.
He let out a scornful laugh, rushed over, and grabbed my wrist tightly.
Ignoring my struggles, he dragged me towards the door with an expressionless face.
"You used to love sticking by my side."
"Now you've changed your tune, saying you won't go when I ask."
"Sloane, why are you so damn difficult?"
"Today, you're going whether you like it or not!"
The man's rough behavior instantly made my wrist red and swollen.
He saw it but merely said offhandedly: "You're a woman in your thirties."
"How can you still be so delicate?"
"Do you really think you're still an eighteen-year-old girl?"
Just because of these words, I suddenly felt weary.
I completely gave up struggling and let Nolan shove me into the car.
On the way, he drove incredibly fast, blurred trees flashing by outside the window.
Watching the unconcealed worry on the man's face, I clutched my clothes at my side and slowly leaned back in the car seat.
I couldn't quite remember how many times this had happened.
Whenever Serenity had even the slightest discomfort, Nolan would become extremely anxious, as if the world was about to end.
I thought he would treat me the same way.
But I was wrong.Facing my cries when I was sick, Nolan would only furrow his brow, perfunctorily pour a glass of water, not even caring if it was warm or not.
If I continued to cry and make a fuss, Nolan would completely cool his expression and warn me in a low voice, "Sloane, what are you playing at?"
"You eat and sleep fine every day, how could you suddenly fall ill?"
"Don't try to test my patience."
The car was very quiet, neither Nolan nor I spoke.
After enduring a silent torture, the car finally came to a stop.
