Chapter 16: Cracks in the Ice A Brutal Morning

Leon groaned as he stretched his sore muscles. The morning sun barely peeked over the horizon, and yet here he was—standing in the Valenford training yard, facing Selene Valenford once again.

She was already dressed in her fencing attire, her silver hair pulled into a tight braid. Not a single strand out of place.

"You're late," she said coldly.

Leon blinked. "The sun hasn't even fully risen."

Selene's expression remained unreadable. "A warrior should always be prepared before battle. You'll arrive earlier tomorrow."

Leon sighed. "You're a demanding princess, you know that?"

Selene ignored the remark and tossed him a wooden sword. "Today, we begin conditioning."

Leon smirked. "You mean fighting?"

Selene's blue eyes narrowed. "No. I mean running."

Leon's smirk vanished.

The Training Begins

An hour later, Leon was panting. His legs burned, his lungs screamed, and yet Selene was still running at full speed, barely breaking a sweat.

Iris, watching from the sidelines, laughed. "I think I'm starting to like her."

Leon shot her a glare. "Shut up."

Selene stopped at the edge of the track and turned to him, arms crossed. Not a single bead of sweat on her forehead.

"You're slower than I expected," she said.

Leon bent over, hands on his knees. "Sorry, I wasn't raised in a military camp."

Selene tilted her head. "Excuses won't help you in a real fight."

Leon wiped his forehead. "Neither will exhaustion."

Selene finally showed the faintest hint of a smirk. "Then train harder."

This woman is insane.

A Moment of Humanity

After hours of brutal conditioning, Leon finally got a break. He sat on the grass, gulping down water, while Selene stood under the shade of a nearby tree.

Leon glanced at her. "You really don't take it easy, huh?"

Selene didn't answer immediately. Instead, she looked out toward the distant mountains beyond the estate walls.

"When I was younger," she said, "I was taught that weakness is a noble's greatest sin. My father ensured that I would never have any."

Leon studied her carefully.

This was the first time she had spoken about herself.

"You don't have to be perfect all the time, you know," he said casually. "Nobody's invincible."

Selene's expression turned unreadable again. "Only the strong survive."

Leon sighed. This girl really was buried under layers of ice.

But for a brief second, he had seen a crack.

And cracks could always be widened.

A Mysterious Visitor

Before their conversation could continue, a messenger arrived at the estate, handing Selene a sealed letter.

She read it, her cold mask returning instantly.

Leon frowned. "Something wrong?"

Selene folded the letter carefully. "That's none of your concern."

She turned to leave—but Leon caught a brief flicker of emotion in her eyes.

Was that... concern?

Leon smirked. Something interesting was happening.

And he was going to find out exactly what.

Next Chapter: "The Duke's Shadow"
