Lucien's mind raced as he calculated his options. His wrists were shackled, but his legs were free—his only advantage. (Alright, System, any suggestions?)
[Oh sure! Why not just sit tight and wait to die? It's not like you're in any immediate danger or anything.]
Lucien scowled. (You're useless.)
[I prefer "selectively helpful."]
Leon's sword gleamed as he raised it, his face dark with fury. "Any last words, you pathetic excuse for a noble?"
Lucien saw his chance. The instant Leon's focus shifted to his own words, Lucien kicked off the ground. With a sudden burst of speed, he rammed into Leon with his shoulder, sending the taller boy stumbling backward.
"What the—?!" Cecilia gasped, but Lucien didn't wait.
He ran. Sprinting toward the window at the far end of the room, he didn't hesitate. With one desperate leap, he dove through it.
The glass shattered around him, and he hit the ground rolling, ignoring the sting of cuts on his skin. (Okay, not my most graceful escape, but I'm alive.)
[For now, anyway. Also, I'm keeping score. That's one ridiculous escape for you. Let's see how many more you manage.]
Lucien didn't stop running until he reached the headmaster's office, bursting through the doors. The headmaster, an elderly man with a stern face and sharp eyes, looked up in shock.
"Lucien von Zephyr? What's the meaning of this?"
Breathing hard, Lucien spilled the entire story—Leon's attempt to kill him, Cecilia's involvement, and the danger they'd all be in if his family got word of this incident.
The headmaster's expression darkened. "This is… troublesome."
A short while later, Leon and Cecilia were summoned. Both stood stiffly as the headmaster glared at them.
"If anything happens to Lucien von Zephyr," the headmaster said coldly, "you will both be accused of his murder. Do I make myself clear?"
Cecilia's face was pale with fury, but she nodded. Leon's jaw clenched, but he, too, bowed his head.
As Lucien turned to leave, the headmaster's voice stopped him. "Lucien. I suggest you stay vigilant. There are those who would not hesitate to silence you."
When Lucien finally returned to his dorm, his body ached and his mind swirled. He collapsed into bed with a groan.
[Well, you didn't die today. Progress! Also, let's talk about how you dived out a window like some kind of action hero. Classic.]
"Shut up, System."
