Clues and Limitations

Lucien collapsed onto his bed with a long, exhausted sigh. His muscles ached from the sparring session with Aeris, and his pride was even more bruised. Even though he'd held his ground better than before, she still wiped the floor with him.

(You know, one day I'm going to beat her.)

[Sure. And one day pigs will fly. Maybe you'll summon one.]

Lucien groaned. "Why do I even talk to you?"

[Because I'm the only one who listens. Also, you love my winning personality.]

Shaking his head, Lucien pulled up his status screen.

Status:

Intelligence: 100 (+2)

Mana: 50 (+5)

Strength: 13 (+1)

Agility: 19 (+1)

Endurance: 21(+1)

Charm: 7(No change… tragic.)

Luck: 2 (Still cursed.)

Skills:

Advanced Magic Theory: Level 5 (+1)

Elemental Control (Fire): Level 3 (+1)

Swordsmanship: Level 2 (+1)

Persuasion: Level 1 (…Well, you tried.)

Lucien blinked at his improved stats. "At least I'm getting stronger."

[Stronger, yes. Good enough to not die a painful, humiliating death? Ehh… debatable.]

Ignoring the system's sass, Lucien pulled out The Summoner's Grimoire — the book written by Xeranthis the Black Thorn. Flipping through the pages, he searched for anything that could help him summon a second spirit. Ignis was powerful, but if he wanted to survive in this world, he needed more.

"Alright, let's do this."

He focused his mana, forming the complex summoning circle exactly as the book described. The air grew heavy, magic swirling around him — and then… nothing.

[Womp womp. Thanks for playing.]

"What did I do wrong?!"

[Oh, I don't know. Maybe because you don't have enough mana? You barely managed to summon Ignis, and you think you're ready for round two?]

Lucien frowned. "How much mana do I even need?"

[Let's see… According to my very sophisticated calculations — a lot more than 50. Summoning isn't some dollar store magic trick, you know.]

Lucien sighed in frustration but stopped when his eyes fell back on the book. Something had been bothering him. There were too many… familiar concepts. The language, the theories — some of them felt like things he'd seen in his past life.

"System… do you think it's possible that Xeranthis was a reincarnator like me?"

[Ooooh, look at you putting those 100 intelligence points to work. Yeah, I'd say the odds are pretty high. That, or someone's been plagiarizing Earth textbooks.]

Lucien's heart raced. If that was true, this book might hold more than just powerful magic — it could hold answers.

[Just try not to die before you figure it out, genius.]
