CHAPTER 23 : Fire and Ashes

In the chaos, Eve gets her hands on a gun. A shot rings out. Carver drops. But even with him gone, the world he built won't let them go so easily. His men scatter, but not before one of them lunges at Eve. Alexander moves without thinking, taking the hit meant for her. Blood stains the ground as he struggles to stay on his feet.

With Carver dead, the underground empire is in shambles, but power vacuums don't stay empty for long. Alexander and Eve know they only have moments before more enemies rise to claim what he left behind. The city feels like it's burning around them, the scent of gunpowder and desperation thick in the air.

Eve clutches the gun with shaking hands, staring at Carver's lifeless body, her breath shallow. "I thought killing a monster would feel like victory. But all I feel is hollow."

Alexander, barely standing, cups her face, forcing her to look at him instead of the blood on the floor. "Then let me carry it for you."

Sirens wail in the distance. They don't have time to grieve or feel relief. They have to run.
