As Elly's car approached the entrance of the San Nicolas estate, the large gates swung open, revealing a well-maintained driveway that led to the grand mansion. The air felt still, almost regal, as Elly's car slowed, the tires gently crunching on the gravel.
Inside, Elly's grandparents, Gov. Jose and Mrs. Socorro Cruz, were having dinner in the formal dining room. The quiet murmur of their conversation and the soft clink of utensils was interrupted by the sound of an approaching vehicle.
Mrs. Socorro looked up, her attention momentarily caught by the sound from outside. She glanced at her husband, raising an eyebrow.
"Are you expecting someone?" she asked, her voice laced with mild surprise.
Gov. Jose paused, his fork halfway to his mouth, and shook his head. "No, not today."
Just then, the maid appeared at the door, her expression slightly surprised.
"Madam, Sir," the maid said, her voice low, "your granddaughter, Eliana... she's here."
Mrs. Socorro froze, her hand hovering over her glass, her breath catching in her throat. Then, her face softened, and in an instant, joy flooded her features. She pushed back from the table, standing so quickly that her chair scraped loudly against the floor.
"Eliana!" she exclaimed, rushing toward the door. Her eyes filled with emotion, her heart leaping as she caught sight of Elly standing just inside the threshold. "It's been so long, my dear!" Mrs. Socorro's arms reached out, pulling Elly into a tight embrace.
After Mrs. Socorro embraced Elly, the warmth in the room seemed to grow even more. Gov. Jose stood up from his chair, his expression softening at the sight of his granddaughter.
"Elly!" he exclaimed, his deep voice rich with surprise and affection. He pulled Elly into a big hug, his large arms enveloping her in a firm, welcoming gesture. "It's so good to see you! You're just in time for dinner." He stepped back, looking at her with a mix of joy and curiosity. "What brings you here?"
Elly gave a small, sheepish smile. "I just came for a visit."
Gov. Jose's brow furrowed slightly, sensing there was more to the story. "But your mom knows you're here?"
Elly hesitated, her gaze drifting for a split second. "Yes, but I told her after I was already a few kilometers away."
A hearty laugh erupted from Gov. Jose, filling the room. "Oh no, you're in big trouble, young lady!" He shook his head with amusement, clearly entertained by her boldness.
Elly let out a long sigh. She knew the trouble she was in. Disobeying her parents wasn't something she took lightly, but at this point, she couldn't turn back. Not now.
As the dinner continued with laughter and stories, the atmosphere lightened. The maid soon entered the room, her presence breaking the flow of conversation. She spoke softly but with urgency.
"Governor, there's someone here who wishes to speak with you."
Elly's heart skipped when she heard the voice from the hallway. She turned toward the door and, with a mix of surprise and recognition, shouted, "Albert? What brings you here?"
The tall, stoic figure of Albert, the family's trusted head of security, stepped into the dining room. His expression was serious, but not unkind. He gave a slight nod before responding.
"Your father sent me," Albert said in his usual calm tone. "He wants us to ensure your safety."
Elly's shoulders slumped as she sighed, the weight of the situation settling on her. "This is too much," she muttered. "I'm sorry for all the trouble I've caused."
Albert smiled faintly, but his voice remained matter-of-fact. "Don't worry about it. It's part of our job. Your mother also sent these clothes for you to wear while you stay here." He handed Elly a bag with neatly folded set of clothes—something practical but comfortable, clearly prepared with care.
"Thanks, Albert," Elly said, her voice soft but grateful.
Gov. Jose, ever the host, raised an eyebrow and gestured toward the empty chair. "Come, Albert, join us for dinner."
But Albert shook his head, his expression polite but firm. "I've already eaten, sir. But thank you."
With that, Albert gave a brief nod and stood by the door, his presence a quiet reminder of the protection surrounding Elly—whether she wanted it or not.
