The storm raged around us as we trudged through the snow, the icy wind cutting through our clothes like knives. Every step felt heavier, the weight of our supplies pressing down on our shoulders.
But it wasn't just the cold that made it hard to breathe. It was the responsibility.
Behind me, the man—Greg—helped his wife, Sarah, support their daughter, Emily, who was barely able to walk. She was weak, half-frozen, her cheeks pale.
"We need to move faster," Ray urged, his voice tense. "We're too exposed."
I didn't argue. He was right.
The blizzard was getting worse, and even with my system-enhanced endurance, my limbs felt sluggish. The others? They were barely holding on.

No shit.
I turned to Daniel. "How far?"
He wiped ice from his face, squinting ahead. "Another mile, maybe less."
A mile. It might as well be a hundred.
Emily coughed violently, a dry, rasping sound. Sarah clutched her tighter, her own lips turning blue. They weren't going to last another mile.
I made a decision.
"Ray, Daniel—give me your spare blankets."
They hesitated but obeyed. I pulled the thickest one around Emily, then draped another over Sarah.
Greg frowned. "You—what about you?"
"I'll manage," I said.
Ray shot me a look but didn't argue.
I felt the cold tearing through me the second I let go of my own warmth. But Emily stopped shivering. That was enough.
We pushed forward.
Between Life and Death
The world blurred into white and wind and exhaustion. Every step was a battle, every breath like inhaling broken glass.
Then—a shape loomed in the snow.
Daniel stumbled forward first. "The bunker!"
Relief crashed through me. We were so damn close.
We reached the entrance, and I punched the code into the reinforced door. It took a second before the heavy locks released, the metal groaning against the ice.
I shoved it open, ushering everyone inside.
Greg collapsed to the floor, pulling Sarah and Emily with him. Daniel slammed the door shut, sealing out the storm.
For a moment, all I could hear was the sound of our ragged breathing.
A Difficult Choice
Sarah clutched Emily close, rocking her, whispering something over and over. Praying.
Ray pulled off his gloves, flexing his stiff fingers. "We need to talk."
I sat against the wall, exhaustion pressing down. "Yeah?"
He looked at the new survivors, then back at me. "More mouths to feed. More people to protect."
I met his gaze. I knew what he was saying.
The group wasn't just mine anymore. It was ours.
And every decision had consequences.
"We find a way," I said finally.
Ray exhaled, shaking his head. "You always say that."
"Because it's true."
"Until it isn't."
He wasn't being cruel. Just practical.
I understood. But I wasn't changing my mind.
Emily was alive because of us.
And that meant something.

I froze.
A greenhouse. A way to grow food, even in this cold.
Maybe—just maybe—we wouldn't have to make impossible choices after all.
