The warmth of the facility was a stark contrast to the frozen wasteland outside. The walls hummed with energy, powered by the generators I had reinforced weeks ago. Yet despite the relative safety, a heavy tension hung in the air.
The survivors we had brought back sat in small clusters, clutching thin blankets, sharing quiet whispers. Their eyes darted around, filled with uncertainty.
I understood.
To them, this was just another camp, another leader who might fail them.
Trust wasn't given freely anymore—it had to be earned.
Ray's Warning
Ray Walker stood near the command console, arms crossed. His weathered face, lined with experience, remained unreadable as he watched the survivors settle in.
"They don't trust you yet," he muttered, his voice low.
"I know," I replied, glancing at Lily as she helped pass out supplies. Even she had picked up on the unspoken fear that hung in the air.
Ray sighed. "Look, I won't sugarcoat it. We're walking a fine line. These people have seen leaders rise and fall. Some have been betrayed, others abandoned."
He turned to me, his steel-gray eyes locking onto mine. "And then there's Carter. He's alive, which means he's still a problem."
I exhaled slowly. "He knows something."
"Or he's playing us," Ray countered. "Either way, we don't have time for games."
System Alert: A Hidden Threat
Before I could respond, the system flickered to life.
[System Notification]
Warning: Unidentified hostile movement detected beyond perimeter.
Status: Investigating...
I clenched my jaw. Another problem.
I tapped my earpiece. "Daniel, talk to me."
His voice came through slightly distorted, the storm's interference messing with the signal. "I've got movement on the outer cameras. Shadows in the snow, staying just beyond our line of sight."
"How many?"
"Hard to tell. Maybe five, maybe twenty. They're moving weird, staying low."
A chill ran down my spine. This wasn't normal scavenger behavior.
"Prep the new surveillance drone," I said. "I want eyes on them now."
[Task Activated: Deploy Advanced Surveillance Drone]
Reward Pending: Upgraded Defensive Auto-Turrets
A Dangerous Gamble
Ray frowned. "You think this is connected to Carter?"
I glanced at the makeshift cell, where Carter sat leaning against the cold steel wall, watching us like a man who knew more than he let on.
"Only one way to find out."
I stepped inside, arms crossed. "You told me you'd talk. Now's the time."
Carter grinned, blood still crusted on his lip from our last encounter. "And what do I get for my trouble?"
I didn't react. "Your life."
His smirk wavered. He knew I wasn't bluffing.
"Fine," he said, stretching his arms. "Your problem isn't the Ravagers. It's the ones pulling their strings."
I narrowed my eyes. "Who?"
He chuckled. "You really think this world fell apart by accident? There are people who knew this was coming. And they prepared."
A bad feeling settled in my gut. "Names."
He hesitated, then muttered, "You ever heard of the Iron Hand Syndicate?"
Ray stiffened beside me. "You're joking."
Carter laughed. "Wish I was."
I glanced at Ray. His jaw was clenched, muscles tense—this wasn't just some random survivor gang.
"Who are they?" I asked.
Ray exhaled sharply. "If Carter's telling the truth, they're not just scavengers. They're ex-military, mercenaries, people who thrived when the world burned. Organized, ruthless."
I turned back to Carter. "And why would they be interested in us?"
Carter's grin returned. "Because you're a threat. You have tech. You have power. And you're not under their control."
System Update: Perimeter Breach
Before I could press him further, the system buzzed again.
[Alert: Unauthorized Entry Detected]
Multiple hostiles have breached outer defenses.
Status: Engaging automated turrets...
I grabbed my rifle. "We're out of time."
Ray nodded, already moving.
The facility was under attack.
Again.
And this time, we might not be ready.

Who do you think the Iron Hand Syndicate really is? Do you believe Carter, or is he still playing games?
And should James take the fight to them before they strike first?
