Chapter 47 – Shadows of War

The next seventy-two hours were a blur of movement, planning, and exhaustion.

Every able-bodied survivor worked through the biting cold, reinforcing defenses, repairing damage, and preparing for the next assault. The Iron Hand Syndicate had underestimated us once. They wouldn't make the same mistake again.

I wouldn't let them.

Pain still burned through my side where Carter's blade had cut deep. The system's nanites kept me from collapsing, but I knew I wasn't at full strength. Didn't matter. There was no time for rest.

Ray stood over the command console, scanning satellite images from the recon drone. His face was stone, but I knew that look—he was worried.

"See anything?" I asked, stepping up beside him.

He grunted, adjusting the zoom. "Nothing yet. But they're out there. They'll come when they're ready."

Daniel entered the room, rifle slung over his shoulder. "Perimeter's secure. All automated turrets are functional. Traps are set." He hesitated, then frowned. "But that won't be enough, will it?"

I exhaled. "No."

The Syndicate didn't fight like wild scavengers or desperate survivors. They were trained, disciplined, and well-equipped. If we fought them head-on, we'd lose.

I needed an edge.

System Upgrade: Tactical Advantage Required

The system flickered in my vision.

[System Notification: Critical Battle Preparation]

Analyzing threats…

Recommended Action: Disrupt Enemy Coordination

New Task Unlocked: EMP Suppression Device

Reward Pending: Enhanced Drone Capabilities

An EMP…

I turned to the console, fingers flying over the keyboard. If I could build a localized electromagnetic pulse, I could disable their communications and drones before they even reached us.

Daniel noticed the screen. "You've got an idea?"

I nodded. "We're going to cut off their eyes and ears before they ever step foot near us."

A Plan of Action

I called for a meeting in the main hall. The survivors gathered, exhaustion on their faces but determination in their eyes.

I looked at them—men and women who had lost everything, but still fought to live.

"We survived their first attack," I said, voice steady. "But they're coming back. Stronger. Smarter. More prepared."

Silence.

I took a breath. "So we have to be smarter, too."

I outlined the plan.

1. EMP Suppression Device – We would set up an electromagnetic pulse to disable their technology the moment they got too close.

2. Decoy Ambush – Instead of defending from the walls, we'd set traps beyond the perimeter to bleed them out before they reached us.

3. Counteroffensive Unit – A small team, led by Ray and Daniel, would hit them from the side once they were disoriented.

Ray crossed his arms. "It's risky."

I nodded. "But it's our best shot."

Lily stepped forward. "And if it fails?"

I met her gaze. "Then we fight like hell."

The Final Hours

With the plan in place, we moved.

I worked through the night, welding together the EMP device, programming it for a single-use burst. It wouldn't last long, but it would give us the window we needed.

Ray trained the survivors, drilling them in close-quarters combat and strategic retreat. We weren't just defending anymore—we were hunting.

Daniel set up sniper nests, camouflaging positions to ensure we had eyes on every approach.

Lily worked alongside the medics, preparing for the wounded.

We weren't just survivors anymore.

We were a fortress.

The Syndicate was coming.

And this time, we were ready.

The stage is set for the biggest battle yet.

Will James' EMP plan work? Or is he underestimating the Syndicate?

What do you think will happen when the fight begins?
