Chapter 8: Amazing drop rate

This surprised him a little.

In "Eight Desolations", the drop rate for equipment was extremely low. The weaker the monster, the lower the chance of dropping equipment.

He never expected that simply killing an ordinary snake would yield a piece of equipment—what a surprise.

The shock lasted only a moment before Lin Jichen figured it out.

It had to be thanks to his innate Qi Luck being maxed out. After all, his innate Qi Luck was clearly labeled with the words "Great Fortune"!

In "Eight Desolations", Qi Luck was divided into four types: Misfortune, Ordinary Luck, Good Fortune, and Great Fortune.

The vast majority of players had Ordinary Luck.

A very small percentage had either Misfortune or Good Fortune.

As for Great Fortune, it was as rare as a phoenix feather—one in a million.

Of course, Great Fortune didn't mean that killing a random chicken would drop a divine artifact. That kind of thing only happened in those Legend games endorsed by Dazhu.

In "Eight Desolations", no matter how good one's Qi Luck was, it merely ensured that, within a limited range and at the highest probability, one would receive the best possible rewards.

But even so, that was more than enough to make Lin Jichen secretly rejoice.

He looked down at the dropped item—it was a bow.

A longbow, green as a crescent moon, lay on the ground.

Lin Jichen picked it up.

[Common-Grade · Green Snake Bow]: A common-grade bow crafted from green bamboo roots and snake tendons. Strength +2, Attack Speed: 1s.

He really did get a piece of equipment.

Unfortunately, there were no arrows, only the bow.

Lin Jichen slung the bow onto his back and continued searching for a second green bamboo viper.

The second snake was no different from a plaything in Lin Jichen's hands. In just a few seconds, he had dealt with it.

Aside from a venomous fang, this snake also dropped another piece of equipment, leaving Lin Jichen speechless.

After playing "Eight Desolations" for so many years, this was the first time he felt like a "Lucky Person".

So this was what it was like to play as a Great Fortune player—awesome!

[Common-Grade · Venomous Snake Arrows]: 20 arrows coated with snake venom. Targets hit lose 2 HP per second for 10 seconds. Effect stacks.

He got exactly what he wanted. A Green Snake Bow paired with Venomous Snake Arrows made for an excellent starter setup.

However, Lin Jichen wasn't in a hurry to use them. This kind of equipment was strong for a beginner, but it didn't interest him.

He mainly intended to play as a sword cultivator, so he didn't plan to use bows. Besides, these little snakes were too easy to kill—perfect for honing his swordplay.

Lin Jichen continued moving through the bamboo forest filled with venomous snakes. As he used his sword, his control improved, and by the time he reached the third snake, he killed it even faster.

The third snake didn't drop anything, but when he reached the fifth one, he got another piece of equipment, which delighted him.

It wasn't the equipment itself that pleased him, but the drop rate.

With Great Fortune on his side, he would never have to worry about gear again.

The third piece of equipment turned out to be a small storage pouch.

[Common-Grade · Snake-Skin Storage Pouch]: Can store up to 20 items, easy to retrieve.

Lin Jichen happily accepted it—he was just wondering where to store all the snake meat and fangs.

Just like that, Lin Jichen effortlessly wiped out all ten green bamboo vipers.

Killing these mundane beasts was too easy. He was still just a mortal, and only after stepping onto the path of immortality would he face truly formidable monsters.

From the ten snakes, aside from the Green Snake Bow and Storage Pouch, the remaining eight had dropped over 100 Venomous Snake Arrows and several dozen copper coins.

In "Eight Desolations", copper coins were the standard currency for mortals, while cultivators used spirit stones.

Other than that, there was nothing else. If even a Great Fortune player could only get this much, the drop rates for ordinary players must be abysmally low.

Additionally, Lin Jichen's cultivation had increased to 30, just 70 more points away from reaching the Qi Refining Stage.

If he wanted to grind, he could reach the threshold within two hours.

But he didn't do that. Instead, he quickly gathered his loot and prepared to leave the bamboo forest.

Compared to leveling up, he had more important matters to attend to.

Yet, just two steps out of the forest, he encountered something that irritated him.

Five male players blocked his path.

"Kid, you got a lot of loot in there. Keeping it all for yourself is too greedy, don't you think? How about this—hand over that bow and the storage pouch at your waist, and we'll let you go. Otherwise… you know what happens, right?"

Lin Jichen looked at the five men, already calculating how to make them strike first.

In "Eight Desolations", attacking a player with malicious intent resulted in a red name, just like in other online games.

And if a red-named player was killed, the punishment was severe.

Just as he was plotting how to turn the tables on these five worthless thugs, a cold and sharp voice rang out from behind.

"You lot are ridiculous. Someone works hard to earn their loot, and you just stand here doing nothing, expecting to extort half of it? Where in the world does that happen? I despise people like you the most!"

The voice belonged to a young man with a hooked nose. He seemed to be in his early twenties and had a somewhat androgynous appearance.

But his words were well-spoken, brimming with a sense of justice.

The five thugs turned red with shame and immediately tried to intimidate the man.

"Mind your own business! Or we'll deal with you too!"

"Oh? I'd like to see you try." The androgynous man smirked, and over a dozen players suddenly stepped up behind him.

The five thugs were instantly dumbfounded. Realizing they had messed with the wrong person, they quickly apologized.

"S-Sorry, brother! We didn't know who we were messing with. We'll leave right now!"

"Hold it! Did I say you could go?" The androgynous man sneered. "Apologize properly to this brother first. That's not too much to ask, is it?"

"N-Not at all!" The five men forced smiles, turned to Lin Jichen, and apologized sincerely before scurrying away.

Once the troublemakers were gone, the androgynous man turned to Lin Jichen with a friendly smile.

"You okay, brother?"

Lin Jichen looked into his 'sincere' eyes and smiled meaningfully.

"I'm fine."

But in his heart, Lin Jichen sneered.

There was no way in hell a ruthless young master like him would step in just to help.

Yes, he knew exactly who this androgynous man was.

In his past life, this man had been famous—the young master of the WanShi Corporation and the leader of the WanShi Guild.

He was ruthless and would stop at nothing to achieve his goals.

And he was an expert at deception, a master at winning people over.

If not for one of his trusted subordinates betraying him and exposing his true nature, many would still believe he was a noble and righteous figure.

Lin Jichen recalled the subtle expressions and stiff dialogue of those five thugs.

He smirked inwardly.

They were most likely this guy's lackeys, staging a fake rescue to gain his trust.

He was either trying to recruit him or buy his gear.

Who said rich second-generation kids were all idiots?

"Let me introduce myself. My name is Wang Jinghao, leader of the WanShi Guild. I happened to pass by and saw you getting harassed, so I stepped in. Hope you don't mind."

Wang Jinghao spoke with flawless charisma, his tone naturally friendly.

But Lin Jichen knew exactly what kind of person he was.

They had a history.
