Chapter 6: The Invitation

As the days went by, Emma found herself growing more and more comfortable in her new role. She was learning the ins and outs of the mansion, and she was getting to know the family better.

But despite her growing comfort, Emma couldn't shake the feeling that there was something more to Ruby's words than met the eye. He had said that he thought they could get along just fine, but what did he mean by that?

As she went about her day, Emma found herself wondering if she would ever find out. But then, just as she was finishing up her chores, Mrs. Jenkins approached her with a smile.

"Emma, I have some good news for you," Mrs. Jenkins said. "Ruby has invited you to join the family for dinner tonight."

Emma's heart skipped a beat as she processed Mrs. Jenkins' words. Ruby had invited her to dinner? What did that mean?

"I don't know if I'm supposed to accept," Emma said, feeling a little uncertain.

But Mrs. Jenkins just smiled and nodded. "Of course you should accept," she said. "It's not every day that Ruby invites one of the staff to join the family for dinner."

Emma felt a sense of excitement and nervousness as she accepted the invitation. What would dinner with the family be like? And what did Ruby's invitation really mean?

As the evening approached, Emma found herself feeling more and more anxious. She had never been one for fancy dinners, and she wasn't sure what to expect.

But as she made her way to the dining room, Emma was surprised to find that the atmosphere was more relaxed than she had anticipated. The family was chatting and laughing, and Ruby smiled at her as she took her seat.

"Welcome, Emma," Mr. Smith said, nodding at her. "We're glad you could join us."

Emma smiled and thanked him, feeling a sense of gratitude towards Ruby for inviting her. As the dinner progressed, Emma found herself feeling more and more at ease. The family was friendly and welcoming, and Ruby seemed to be going out of his way to make sure she felt included.

But as the evening wore on, Emma began to feel a sense of unease. Ruby's eyes seemed to be locked on hers, and she couldn't shake the feeling that he was trying to tell her something.

As the dinner came to a close, Emma felt a sense of relief wash over her. She had survived the evening, and she had even managed to have a good time.

But as she stood up to leave, Ruby caught her eye and smiled. "Walk with me," he said, nodding towards the door.

Emma felt a sense of trepidation as she followed Ruby out of the dining room. What did he want to talk to her about? And why did she feel like she was in trouble?

As they walked through the quiet halls of the mansion, Emma couldn't shake the feeling that she was being led into unknown territory. And she wasn't sure if she was ready for what was coming next.

Ruby stopped in front of a large wooden door and turned to face her. "I wanted to talk to you about something," he said, his eyes locked on hers.

Emma felt her heart skip a beat as she wondered what he was going to say. Was he going to fire her? Or was he going to ask her something else entirely?

"What is it?" Emma asked, trying to sound calm.

Ruby smiled and leaned against the doorframe. "I was wondering if you'd like to join me for a picnic tomorrow," he said. "I have a few hours free, and I thought it would be nice to get out of the mansion for a bit."

Emma felt a sense of surprise wash over her. A picnic? With Ruby? She wasn't sure what to say.

But as she looked into Ruby's eyes, Emma felt a sense of excitement and anticipation. Maybe this was exactly what she needed - a chance to get out of the mansion and spend some time with Ruby.

"Okay," Emma said finally, smiling up at Ruby. "I'd love to."

Ruby grinned and pushed off the doorframe. "Great," he said. "I'll meet you in the garden at 2 pm tomorrow."

Emma nodded and watched as Ruby walked away. She felt a sense of excitement and anticipation as she wondered what the next day would bring.
