Field was dumbfounded. What kind of person was this?
"Damn it!" Field was furious.
The butler, Cao, shrunk his neck. He had hesitated to speak earlier, and what he wanted to say was this: Baron Bull and his son were not good people.
"Wait! You're the Baron of Nightfall Territory? Great, finally someone to act as a buffer for my fortress. I hope you can survive a few more days! But when you're being chased by the undead, don't come bothering me. I won't open the door for you."
The man on the city wall, reminded by his advisor, remembered Field. Unfortunately, all he could think of was using Field as a strategic buffer for Kashan Fortress.
The butler couldn't hold back anymore and leaned in to whisper, "Richard Bull, the only son of Baron Bull, is known as the Coward. We'd better not engage with him."
"Very true. No need to argue with fools," Field said, veins bulging on his forehead as he slowly stepped back. "If everyone's playing this game, then I won't hold back either."
"You can open the gate to Nightfall Territory yourselves! It's safe there," Richard said before retreating into the castle. "Now get out of my sight, you filthy outsiders!"
The advisor beside him wiped his cold sweat and said, "Young master, isn't it a bit... to deceive them like this?"
"Shut up!"
After retreating a certain distance, Field told everyone to wait.
"Now I know why the undead are here."
Field's lips twitched as he adjusted the sword at his waist. "Luckily, the orcs are also blocked by the gray mist, and the peace treaty binds them. Otherwise, the empire's most proud defense line would become a joke."
"Respected sir... we won't disturb you anymore," the villagers gathered around, awkwardly pushing each other. They didn't want to provoke Field, who looked very angry. In the end, they didn't dare to run directly but pushed one person forward to bid farewell. "We're leaving. Thank you for your help."
Field was still fuming. Although he was born in modern society, it didn't mean he could be pushed around. His eyelids drooped like a wolf ready to devour its prey, and he coldly growled, "Did I allow you to leave? Your lord has abandoned you. Now you are masterless, so I have taken you in."
A free labor force, just what he needed.
"What? No, no, sir, please let us go. We are free people," the villagers protested vehemently. From what Richard had just said, Field was heading to Nightfall Territory, a cursed land filled with death. Going there meant certain doom.
"You can be let go, but it will cost you five gold coins as a ransom. I saved you, and this is what I deserve," Field said without hesitation, drawing his sword. "Either come with me to Nightfall Territory, or pay up. Otherwise, I'll chop you into pieces and feed you to the dogs. Understood?"
"Whew~ So he really is a noble."
Aishna, standing nearby, breathed a sigh of relief. Field's gentleness and kindness these past few days had made her feel like she was living in a dream. Now that Field was showing the ruthless and unscrupulous side of a noble, she felt more at ease.
Like Aishna, the villagers seemed to find some perverse comfort in being threatened. They knelt down, one after another, agreeing to go to Nightfall Territory. After all, whether they went or not, death seemed certain. Might as well take a chance.
"Worthless scum."
Field sheathed his sword and covered his face in frustration, thinking to himself: Fists are always more persuasive than words.
"Sir, don't give up!" Aishna, seeing Field's displeasure, cautiously came forward to comfort him.
Field glanced at her and was momentarily stunned. It wasn't until Aishna showed a frightened expression that Field snapped out of it and quickly smiled. "I'm fine. I was just lost in thought."
As they continued forward, Field was startled by the large number of skull markers on his mini-map as they approached the fortress gate.
"This is what Richard meant by 'the gate is safe'?"
That damn fool, taking money but not doing the job, and now trying to set me up with the undead. If I had rashly entered the fortress gate, I might have been caught off guard by the undead hiding inside.
Field was annoyed, but he quickly thought of something, his fingers rubbing his chin: "Since Baron Bull's idiot son is holed up in the inner city and has abandoned the outer strongholds, does that mean I can make a big profit? After all, no one's watching."
He acted on his thoughts immediately. Field was no saint.
What use was there in showing courtesy and shame to these lowlifes? He should just take their money, food, and women by force.
Field flicked his cloak: "Cao, do you remember those who dared to fight back against the undead with weapons? Gather them all. If there aren't thirty, fill the rest with strong men."
Cao, though timid, was efficient. Soon, thirty slaves of various races were assembled.
"Before that, there are some who deserve to eat horse dung, and they're in the way," Field glanced at Connor in the distance, who looked displeased.
"Brave Knight Connor, although this is not my fief, as a noble with martial virtue, I must help the farmers here and kill the undead. Will you join me?" Field came up with a ridiculous excuse.
Are you insane? Connor was stunned. He had already lost a subordinate fighting the undead.
He was still troubled by the compensation for the bereaved family, and now this idiot baron wanted to help others quell the undead tide? He couldn't believe his ears.
"No, I've already escorted you to the border of Nightfall Territory. It's just a gate away. I need to return to the Earl to report," Connor firmly refused. As he spoke, he couldn't help but laugh: "Sorry, but I think taking this rabble to fight the undead is worse than taking pigs. At least the pigs would fill the undead's stomachs."
Field looked regretful: "Alright, I thought you'd want to share in the glory."
"Don't forget the empire's laws and your family's teachings. Report on time."
Connor left a warning and galloped away with his cavalry. Field didn't even have time to remind him that he still hadn't eaten the horse dung.
"Are we really going to provoke the undead?" Butler Cao asked, trembling.
Field didn't expect the butler to fight. He waved his hand: "You stay here and watch the slaves. Don't let them escape. If anyone tries to run, burn them to ashes with the slave contract."
He said this loudly, and the slaves were terrified.
Cao, however, was relieved.
Forcing the slaves to arm themselves with sickles, pitchforks, and axes, Field left with Aishna.
After walking for ten minutes, Field led them into an uninhabited forest. Using the mini-map provided by his lord abilities, he carefully confirmed that no one was around, then took out a beautiful crystal ball from the bag on the right side of his warhorse.
Aishna's status panel had changed. He had been distracted earlier because he wanted to make sure he wasn't seeing things.
