Chapter 5

📖 CHAPTER 5: THE STORM BEGINS

Xu Minghao remained in the courtyard long after Gu Qingyan left, his expression unreadable.

The young woman who once adored him, who once hung onto his every word, had just walked away from him without hesitation.

His hands tightened into fists.

This wasn't over.

No woman had ever disregarded him, least of all Gu Qingyan.

As he turned to leave, a shadow approached.

Gu Ruoyun, draped in soft lavender robes, stepped forward with a concerned expression. "Your Highness, you seem troubled."

Xu Minghao looked at her, his irritation barely masked.

She smiled softly, reaching out as if to smooth the folds in his sleeve. "Did Sister upset you?"

Xu Minghao scoffed. "She's merely throwing a childish tantrum."

Gu Ruoyun's fingers curled slightly. A tantrum? That didn't seem like a tantrum.

Her sources had informed her about Gu Qingyan rejecting the Crown Prince's gift yesterday. She had dismissed it at first, thinking her foolish half-sister was just sulking.

But seeing Xu Minghao's stormy expression now…

Her heart clenched.

Had Gu Qingyan really changed?

No. Impossible.

Gu Qingyan had always been weak, pathetic, eager to please.

She must be pretending.

Gu Ruoyun bit her lip, lowering her gaze in a show of sadness. "Sister has been… acting strangely lately." She sighed. "I worry for her."

Xu Minghao glanced at her, his anger slightly softening at her gentle concern.

"Don't worry," he said, reaching out to pat her hand. "She'll come back to her senses soon enough."

Gu Ruoyun lowered her lashes, a flicker of something unreadable in her eyes.

Would she?

📍Gu Manor – Eldest Young Master's Study

Gu Qingyan stepped into her older brother's study, her expression calm.

Gu Xian, the Eldest Young Master of the Gu family, sat behind his desk, his sharp eyes scrutinizing her.

She knew what was coming.

"I heard the Crown Prince visited you," Gu Xian said, his tone neutral.

Gu Qingyan nodded. "Yes."

Gu Xian's brows furrowed slightly. "And you dismissed him?"

"Yes."

Silence stretched between them.

Gu Qingyan remained poised, meeting her brother's gaze head-on.

Gu Xian had always been the pride of the Gu family, a calculating and ambitious man who understood politics better than anyone. His younger sister's engagement to the Crown Prince was supposed to solidify their family's power.

But today, she had openly rejected that power.

Gu Xian tapped his fingers against the table.

Finally, he sighed. "You're not acting like yourself."

Gu Qingyan's lips curved slightly. "Perhaps this is who I've always been."

Gu Xian studied her for a long moment before leaning back.

"You're playing a dangerous game, Qingyan."

She smiled. "I know."

Gu Xian exhaled deeply before finally nodding. "Very well. Do as you wish. Just don't make an enemy of the wrong people."

Her smirk deepened.

"Oh, but Brother," she said lightly, "I was never the one who started this war."
