Chapter 31

📖 CHAPTER 31: A DANCE WITH THE DEVIL

The night air was cool as Gu Qingyan stepped out of the Eastern Palace. The lanterns flickered, casting long shadows along the stone path.

Xiao Yue waited anxiously by the carriage, her hands clenched together. The moment she saw her mistress, she rushed forward. "Miss, are you alright?"

Gu Qingyan's lips curled slightly. "Why wouldn't I be?"

Xiao Yue hesitated. "The Crown Prince… did he—?"

Gu Qingyan glanced back at the grand palace doors. Feng Yusheng's golden eyes had been filled with calculation, amusement, and something deeper. Something dangerous.

"He set the board," she murmured, stepping into the carriage. "But he's not the only player."

The carriage door shut, and the horses began moving.

Xiao Yue sat across from her, still looking worried. "Miss, do you think His Highness suspects something?"

Gu Qingyan's fingers lightly tapped against her knee. "Of course he does. He wouldn't be the Crown Prince if he didn't."

Xiao Yue swallowed. "Then… what will he do next?"

Gu Qingyan smirked.

"He will try to push me into making a choice."

📍 Hidden Courtyard – Midnight

Gu Qingyan arrived at a secluded courtyard deep within the city, where a lone figure stood beneath the moonlight.

Dressed in black robes, the man's posture was relaxed, yet an undeniable aura of danger surrounded him.

Gu Qingyan stepped forward, her expression calm. "You sent the letter?"

The man turned slightly, revealing sharp, silver eyes.

Su Yichen.

The infamous shadow hidden behind the empire's most dangerous secrets.

He studied her for a long moment before speaking. "You met with the Crown Prince."

Gu Qingyan nodded. "And?"

Su Yichen tilted his head slightly. "And yet, you're still standing here."

A ghost of a smile touched her lips. "Disappointed?"

He chuckled softly. "On the contrary."

Gu Qingyan folded her arms. "Why did you call me here?"

Su Yichen's gaze darkened. "Because you're running out of time."

She narrowed her eyes. "Explain."

He stepped closer, his voice lowering. "The Emperor has ordered an investigation into the Gu family. Your enemies are growing bolder."

Gu Qingyan's expression didn't change, but her fingers curled slightly.

She had expected this. The Gu family had too many wolves circling them.

Su Yichen watched her carefully. "The Crown Prince is testing you. The Second Prince is waiting for you to fall. And the Empress…" He smirked. "Well, she never did like you."

Gu Qingyan exhaled slowly. "Then it seems I must act first."

Su Yichen raised a brow. "And what do you plan to do?"

Gu Qingyan's gaze flickered. "Set my own trap."

Su Yichen chuckled. "Interesting."

He took another step forward, his voice softer now. "You're playing a dangerous game, Qingyan."

She met his gaze evenly. "Then I'll make sure I win."

The night wind stirred, carrying their unspoken words into the darkness.

The first move had been made.

Now, the real game would begin.
