With the lights off, the room plunged into darkness.
I lay on the bed, my body exhausted, but my mind unusually alert.
Soon after, a warm, soft body pressed against me.
Hot breath tickled my neck as a voice whispered,
"Briar, are you asleep?"
I remained silent, then felt a pair of delicate hands slip under my shirt, sliding upwards.
I quickly grabbed Melody's hands, pulling them away.
Just the thought of what she and Faisal might have done on this bed made me feel sick to my stomach.
But in my fatigue, I simply said,
"I'm really tired. Let's get some rest."
Fortunately, Melody hadn't intended anything more.
After my rejection, she just lay quietly beside me and softly asked,
"Briar, when's your next mission?"
The food we'd received today was supposed to last a week, but Faisal had wasted a bag.
I'd have to leave earlier than planned.
"In three days."
Hearing this, Melody excitedly pressed closer and said,
"Can you take me and Faisal with you on your next mission? It's been so long since I've been to the surface."
Upon hearing this, I frowned and refused without a second thought.
"No way! I'm going on a mission, not a picnic! The outside world is far too dangerous for you to just go on a whim!"
Melody hadn't expected me to refuse her, and she whined petulantly.
"It can't be that dangerous, can it? Look at how many times you've gone on missions and come back safely. Please take us with you! Briar is begging you."
"No means no!"
No matter how much Melody pouted or pleaded, I remained unmoved, only refusing.
Seeing that I wouldn't budge, Melody suddenly became angry.
She huffed and turned her back to me, no longer speaking.
I wasn't in the mood to coax her either. After all her fussing, I quickly felt sleepy and drifted off again.
Early the next morning, I returned from my workout and made breakfast.
Melody was still sulking, waiting for me to console her.
In the past, I would agree to her every request.
But going to the surface wasn't child's play. So many search team members had died up there.
She and Faisal didn't know anything - they'd only be going to their deaths.
I ate my meal in silence. Melody saw that I truly wouldn't agree.
She flung down her utensils and stormed out in a huff.
For the next two days, Melody didn't give me a kind look.
Little did I expect, on the third day when I arrived at the mission meeting point ready to depart...Yet I saw Melody and Faisal looking thoroughly pleased with themselves.
