"This is the BD wreath you wanted. Here's yours... And you—don't worry, I didn't forget the special edition. You'll just have to wait a bit; my assistant has gone to grab it."
"Assistant?"
Hearing Gaius mention an assistant, the male students in the hidden corner, conducting the transaction, looked curious. Moments later, they saw David rushing over, looking hurried.
"It's you, David Martinez!"
David had always been cautious about the items he sold, ensuring he traded only under safe conditions. Though many students at the academy knew about a mysterious black-market BD wreath dealer, few knew his identity. Seeing that it was David Martinez, the revelation left many students shocked.
For classmates who shared a classroom with David, the news hit harder. David Martinez, who often topped their class academically, was also secretly a BD wreath dealer. The realization stirred complicated emotions.
The student who consistently outranked them in class had a secret life as a street vendor...
Among the students who enjoyed Japanese books, random storylines from novels flashed through their minds, making them feel as though they had unlocked a secret.
This guy doesn't seem so untouchable now, they thought. Actually, it's kind of funny—he sells BD wreaths at school. Just a guy from the bottom of society after all.
Born into corporate families, Arasaka Academy students were raised to compare themselves to others, measuring success by the standards instilled by their parents. When faced with someone better than them in specific areas, they developed envy. But once they discovered flaws in their competition—areas where they were superior—their pride quickly resurfaced.
Now, seeing David Martinez—top of their class—selling BD wreaths in secret, many felt a shift in perspective.
No matter how good his grades are or how he pretends in class, he's just a commoner from Santo Domingo. When he applies to the company, he'll still be rejected. Joining Arasaka? Not a chance.
For some, the disdain they once held for David's achievements softened.
They watched him work under Gaius, a street-level BD wreath distributor, and a hint of contempt returned. So, this is what his future holds. Helping some low-life. Selling BD wreaths on the street.
Despite their shifting feelings, the students moved quickly. Many smiled at David, using their status as classmates to push their requests forward.
"Hey, Martinez, send me my wreath first," they said with feigned friendliness.
Break time was short, after all. Getting their BD wreaths quickly was more important than preserving their egos. A smile here and there didn't cost them anything.
---
David Martinez, unaware of the storm of thoughts running through his classmates' minds, saw only paying customers.
If they're paying, I'm smiling.
To David, the surge in BD wreath sales was beyond expectation. As euros flooded his account, his wallet grew heavier. He understood this demand was temporary—once most students had what they wanted, sales would inevitably drop to a fraction of their current levels. Even so, watching the numbers rise filled him with a genuine, bright smile.
I can make this much money?
David's thoughts turned to Gaius.
If it weren't for him, I'd never have had the courage to sell in such large quantities. I wouldn't have had the capital either.
Amid the busy work, David glanced at Gaius and felt a pang of guilt. Gaius had invested the initial funds and supported the sales, yet he insisted David keep all the profits from today. It didn't sit well with David.
Remembering his mother's words about friendship, David decided to transfer all the earnings from the sales during the break to Gaius.
With their personal terminal connections, there was no need for hacking tools. A simple transfer sufficed. David attached a message to the transfer, but to his surprise, the money was immediately rejected.
---
"I told you, what you earn today is yours. I keep my word," Gaius replied.
"But it's too much..."
"This is nothing. Don't worry about it. You need this money more than I do. Besides, I never wanted the profits from the sale. This is just a one-time thing. For future sales, we already agreed—I take 70%, you take 30%. That's fair.
In the long run, you'll make far more money than you expect. By the time my experience month here is over, you'll be handling everything alone. You'll have to take risks, especially with the black-market BD wreaths.
If you work in Arasaka with a conscience like this, you'll get eaten alive. Don't let that happen."
Under Gaius' firm reasoning, David reluctantly accepted the earnings.
After the break, Gaius returned to class. Ending his communication with David, he opened a channel with Oliver and Jack.
Karl:
"I found some information about our target, Tanaka. While chatting with one of the students buying a BD wreath, I learned something interesting. There's another student at the academy named Katsuo Tanaka. He might be the 'self-proclaimed son' we've been looking for. Turns out, I happen to know him."
