Chapter 20: Bound by Shadows
I could feel the weight of my decision as I stood over Varek's lifeless body. The mission was complete. The traitor was dead. But the emptiness that followed felt like the shadows themselves had come alive, wrapping around me, tightening with each passing second.
I'd expected satisfaction, but there was only hunger.
The system's voice rang in my mind again, as expected:
"Objective completed.]
Reward granted: Enhanced shadow manipulation abilities. You now have access to more powerful shadow techniques.]
[ Time to complete the next mission: Eliminate the rival faction's leader. Proceed when ready."]
More power. The only thing that mattered.
I barely acknowledged the system's reward. The voice had become a constant companion, pushing me toward greater strength, feeding me with abilities I could barely control. But that was fine. I didn't care. I wasn't afraid of the cost. I was hungry for it.
More power. I needed it. I craved it. The more I used the shadows, the more I felt them pulling me in—binding me, but giving me the strength I wanted. I wasn't afraid of becoming something darker. I wasn't afraid of losing myself. All I cared about was becoming stronger, more capable, more unstoppable.
I turned away from the body. There was no time to linger. Another mission awaited me. Another opportunity to gain what I needed.
The shadows followed me as I moved through Black Hollow's winding streets, their whispers growing louder, more insistent. They were always with me now. They were my tool and my curse, but I had no intention of turning back.
I had made my choice. I would walk this path, alone, if necessary. The Black Dawn was no longer a part of my life. I was done with them, done with the strings they tried to pull. Now, I was my own master.
But even without the Black Dawn, the system was still there. It wasn't just a guide—it was my partner, or so it seemed. The more I followed its commands, the stronger I became. The more power I gained, the more I felt the pull of the shadows within me, the more insatiable the hunger grew.
["Objective: Eliminate the rival faction's leader, Felix Grayson.]
[He has become a significant threat to you.]
[Time limit: 48 hours."]
I didn't need to think twice. The mission was clear. The power would come with this one, too. The system knew what it was doing. It was pushing me into this world, further than I ever thought possible. And I was ready.
The target was in the upper district—a place I'd been to many times before, but this time, it felt different. It wasn't about elimination for the sake of the Black Dawn. It was about me. About my need for more.
I was no longer just a tool for someone else's purposes. This was about my survival. This was about my ascension.
The building where Felix Grayson was holed up was tall, imposing. It looked like the home of a man who thought he was untouchable. But he wasn't. Not anymore. Not with me coming for him.
I stepped into the shadows, and they welcomed me like an old friend. The familiar tug at my skin, the sharpness in the air. I could feel the power flowing through me with every step. I could feel the darkness wrapping itself around me, becoming part of me.
Felix Grayson wasn't expecting me, not really. His men stood guard at the entrance, but they were weak. I moved through them like they were nothing more than obstacles in my path. My shadows tore through them—quick, clean, precise. They never saw me coming. They never stood a chance.
I reached the top floor, the target's quarters. I could feel him in the next room—nervous, pacing. He knew what was coming.
I stepped into the room, the shadows stretching behind me, blending into the corners. Felix looked up, his eyes widening when he saw me standing there.
"Who are you?" His voice trembled, though he was trying to hide it. "What do you want?"
"I'm here to end this." I didn't need to say more. The shadows reacted to my command. They surged forward, wrapping around Felix, binding him to the chair. He struggled, but it was useless. The more he fought, the tighter the shadows became.
"No, no! Please!" His voice broke, panic rising in his chest. "I don't know anything! I didn't mean to—"
I didn't care. The mission was simple. End him.
The shadows swarmed around him, choking the life out of him. He gasped, his hands clawing at the air as he tried to break free. But it was no use. The shadows squeezed tighter, and with a final, suffocating breath, he was gone.
I stood over the body, my heart beating faster with the familiar rush of power. The shadows around me dissipated, leaving only the lifeless corpse behind. The mission was complete, but the satisfaction was fleeting. There was no triumph, no joy—just an emptiness that gnawed at me.
The system's voice returned:
["Objective completed.]
[Reward granted: Enhanced shadow control.]
[You now have access to advanced shadow techniques, including shadow creation and temporary intangibility.]
[Time to proceed with the next mission."]
More power. I could feel it already, surging through me like fire. The ability to create shadows at will, to phase through solid objects for a brief time. It was incredible. But it was also dangerous.
The hunger within me grew again. I needed more. I needed to keep going.
But deep down, I knew. I was losing myself to the shadows. The more I used them, the more dependent I became on their power. The more they consumed me.
And yet, I didn't care. Not yet.
I stepped back into the shadows, ready to move on. The city had become my kingdom, and the shadows were my rule. I was no longer just an assassin. I was something more—something greater. And I wouldn't stop. I would keep going, keep growing, keep feeding the hunger. I would rise, and nothing would stop me.
The system was my only companion now, my only guide. But it wasn't enough. I needed to control it. I needed to control everything.
And I would.
