The Shadowvale’s Secrets

The wind grew colder as Eira, Kael, Seren, and Ryven traveled toward the Shadowvale. Jagged cliffs loomed overhead, casting long, eerie shadows across the narrow path. The further they ventured, the heavier the air became thick with old magic and an unsettling sense of being watched.

Eira's dragon mark pulsed faintly against her skin, a constant reminder of the power now tied to her. She glanced at Kael, who walked beside her, his sword ready in case of danger.

"How much farther?" she asked, her voice breaking the silence.

Kael pointed to the mist-covered valley ahead. "Through there. The sanctuary is hidden inside the valley's heart, but the magic protecting it won't let just anyone in."

Ryven laughed softly from the back. "And here I thought this would be boring."

Seren, walking ahead, shot him a cold glare. "If you're not going to help, keep quiet."

Eira sighed, trying to push down the tension gnawing at her. "What's in the Shadowvale, Kael? You've been quiet about it."

Kael hesitated, his jaw tightening. "The Shadowvale isn't just a place. It's a graveyard for dragons those who refused to follow the Dark Sorcerer. Their spirits still linger. And they don't take kindly to intruders."

Eira swallowed hard. "So, if they think we're enemies…"

"They'll tear us apart," Seren finished bluntly.

Ryven chuckled. "What a warm welcome. I can't wait."

Eira ignored him, focusing on Kael. "Is there a way to prove we're not threats?"

Kael's expression softened as he met her gaze. "The sanctuary recognizes the Dragon's Chosen. If the mark accepts you, we'll be safe."

If, Eira thought grimly. But she nodded. "Then we don't have a choice. Let's go."

They entered the mist, and immediately the world seemed to change. The air grew colder, and a low, mournful sound echoed through the valley. Shapes moved within the fog massive, winged figures with glowing eyes.

Seren drew her daggers, her stance tense. "They know we're here."

Eira's heart pounded as the ground trembled beneath her feet. A deep, echoing voice filled the air.

"Why do you come to the Shadowvale?"

The mist swirled as a ghostly dragon emerged its form translucent, eyes burning with pale fire.

Eira stepped forward, her voice steady despite her fear. "I am Eira. I bear the mark of the Dragon's Chosen. I seek your sanctuary."

The dragon's gaze fell on her wrist, and the mark flared brightly. But instead of welcoming her, the spirit growled.

"The Dragon's Chosen once betrayed us. Why should we trust you?"

Kael's face paled. "What is he talking about?"

Eira's heart raced. Betrayal? No one had told her about that.

Before she could answer, the dragon spirit lunged, its claws reaching for her.

"Eira, move!" Kael shouted, pushing her aside.
