Amanda's chest heaved, her eyes burning with both rage and disbelief.
"Do you even realize what you're saying?!"
I took a slow breath, then nodded.
"Amanda, let's get a divorce."
The instant those words left my lips, I felt the heavy weight inside me lift, as if a long-accumulated pressure had finally been released.
Divorce had crossed my mind before, but now, I could finally say it out loud.
Amanda stared at me, her eyes narrowing as if processing what I'd just said.
After what seemed like an eternity, a cold, mocking smile twisted at the corner of her mouth.
"Are you serious? You're nothing but a sales manager at my company. Without me, who would even look at a useless man like you?"
Useless.
Her words cut deep, reopening wounds I had long since thought healed.
I gave a dry, bitter smile, shaking my head. I had no intention of exchanging more words, so I turned and walked away.
"You'll remember how you begged me to marry you, won't you? If you go through with this divorce, don't come crying to me when you regret it."
Her voice followed me as I walked.
She went to spend an entire week with Justin.
I packed up my things, arranged for them to be shipped away, and then called a few old friends to grab a drink.
When they heard about my decision, they all expressed their support. After all, they had seen the way I'd been treated at work for so long.
After the drinks, I stumbled home, my head spinning.
As I collapsed onto the couch, my eyes landed on the wedding photo hanging on the wall.
Just then, Amanda posted a picture on social media.
It showed her and Justin locked in a passionate embrace, smiling like nothing in the world could touch them.
I exhaled sharply, turned off my phone, and placed the divorce papers I'd already prepared on the table.
...
The next morning, I went to the office to submit my resignation.
It was all a formality, really.
By that point, any influence I had in the company had been stripped away.
So when the HR director received my resignation, there wasn't even a second thought. They approved it immediately without any questions.
Before I even made it to the front door, Amanda called.
"Lucas, you've gone too far!"
"I've rejected your resignation. That's enough. If you keep pushing, I'll make sure you don't get a dime and I'll have you kicked out of the Johnson family group!"
I couldn't help but laugh coldly.
Seven years together, and she still thought I was just some gold-digging, spineless man she could control with money?
"Do whatever you want. I don't care anymore."
With that, I blocked and deleted her number.
And just like that, the silence felt almost freeing.
I resubmitted my resignation, and this time, Amanda approved it without hesitation.
I took my resignation letter, turned my back on the company, and walked out for good.
