The World Beyond The Self

The night deepened, the moon casting silver light across the valley. Wang Shi remained seated, still absorbing the strange but exhilarating sensation of spiritual energy.

Bai Lu let the silence linger before speaking.

"You've taken your first step. But cultivation is not just about strength. You must understand the world you are stepping into."

Wang Shi glanced at her. "The greater forces at play?"

She nodded. "There are powers far beyond individuals like you or me. The world is governed by forces that have shaped history, war, and destiny itself."

She raised a hand, fingers tracing the air as if grasping something unseen.

"There are three major forces that cultivators must acknowledge. The first is Heaven's Will—the unseen law that dictates fate. Some believe it rewards the worthy and punishes the wicked. Others say it is impartial, an endless cycle of balance. No one truly understands it, yet no one can escape it."

Wang Shi frowned. "So it controls everything?"

Bai Lu's expression remained unreadable. "Perhaps. Or perhaps people only call it fate when they cannot explain the consequences of their choices."

She moved on.

"The second is the Mortal Sects and Empires—those who hold power over the land. Countless sects and kingdoms rise and fall, each seeking dominance. Some exist for knowledge, others for power. Their ambitions shape the world as much as the heavens do."

Wang Shi absorbed her words. "And the third?"

Her voice lowered slightly.

"The third is the Unknown Forces—beings, relics, and entities that do not belong within the cycle of life and death. Some call them gods. Others call them demons. Some slumber, some watch, and some… wait."

A chill ran through Wang Shi's spine.

Bai Lu looked at him then, her gaze steady. "These forces move whether we acknowledge them or not. If you wish to walk the path of cultivation, you must understand that strength alone is not enough. Knowledge is what separates the living from the fallen."

Wang Shi was silent for a moment, then asked, "And where do we fit into all of this?"

Bai Lu's lips curved slightly, though whether in amusement or something else, he couldn't tell.

"That," she said, "is something you must discover for yourself."

The conversation left a weight in the air, one Wang Shi couldn't shake. He had stepped onto the path of cultivation—but what lay ahead was far greater than he had imagined.

For now, however, he had only one goal.

To grow stronger.

To be ready.
