Beneath The Surface

Bai Lu moved swiftly through the dense underbrush, her senses sharp and alert. The trail she had been following had grown colder, but the weight of something wrong still hung in the air.

She had spent the last few days unraveling the threads of a mystery that seemed woven into the empire's very fabric. The disturbed seal, the presence of forbidden rituals, and now… whispers of something older lurking just beneath the surface.

Someone had meddled with powers beyond their grasp.

And she was close—so close—to finding out who.

She reached a narrow gorge, its rocky walls carved with faded inscriptions. Time had eroded much of the markings, but she recognized the remnants of ancient warding scripts. Their power was almost completely drained.

Her jaw tightened. This place was once protected. Now, it's exposed.

Stepping forward, she knelt by a cluster of broken stones, fingertips grazing the surface. The residual energy was faint but unmistakable—someone had been here recently.

She closed her eyes, focusing.

A sharp pulse of energy flared in her mind—an imprint left behind by the disturbance. It was chaotic, fragmented. But beneath the layers of disorder, she caught a fleeting glimpse of something chilling.

A sigil. One she had seen before.

Her eyes snapped open.

The Imperial Court.

Not in an official capacity, of course. The court would never openly sanction such reckless tampering with ancient forces. But there were always factions working in the shadows, pursuing power without regard for consequence.

Her grip on the hilt of her sword tightened.

This wasn't just about a seal. This was about control.

A sudden rustle behind her sent her instincts flaring. In an instant, she shifted, sword drawn in a fluid motion. The tip hovered just inches from the throat of the intruder.

A young man in plain robes raised his hands in surrender, his face pale.

"P-please, I mean no harm!"

Bai Lu narrowed her eyes, not lowering her blade. "Then why are you sneaking up on me?"

"I wasn't sneaking!" he protested quickly. "I—I saw you investigating and thought you might be—" He hesitated, swallowing hard. "One of them."

Her grip on her sword remained firm. "Who?"

The man exhaled shakily. "The ones who came before. They took my master."

Bai Lu's pulse quickened. This just became more complicated.

Lowering her sword slightly, she studied him closely. "Tell me everything you know."

If the court's shadow forces were involved, then she wasn't just up against some reckless scholars meddling with forgotten power.

She was up against something far more dangerous.

And time was running out.
